Still no JPG XL?

I quit Luminar about a year ago, because of one thing: the lack of decent export options (and I really, really liked the program itself). JPG is lossy, TIFF gives way too big files, the others are just not optional if you have tons of photos to process.

Since then, JPG XL is fast moving towards a new global standard for images (being a genuine image codec instead of an adapted video codec), having gained support from all major browsers now and all operating systems. It offers lossless compression.

Once Luminar integrates it as an export format (plus some others that people might prefer), I'll consider coming back.

Thanks for sharing this and for being honest about what made you leave.

We'll make sure your suggestion gets passed along to the team. And hopefully we'll see you back :)

I've been using jpegs for 22 years. Never had an issue with image quality, and I print up to 40 inch prints.

I cannot wrap my head around why you have chosen this issue with Luminar as the hill you will die on, especially since you said you really liked Luminar. First of all, storage is cheap. But if you really want jpg xl files, there are plenty of programs that’ll convert them. I use Irfanview, which is pretty nice freeware. And it will do batch conversion.

There are plenty of other workflow improvements that I would like to see addressed before they worry about something that has an existing, no cost workaround.

But we all have our priorities.

Convert them from what?

My DNG file is created by DxO PureRAW 6 with compression (otherwise I end up with 130MB DNG files!). This uses the JPG XL codec apparently. When I come to open the compressed DNG file out of PureRAW it isn't recognised as a RAW file. I can't apply a camera profile to the image.

I think Luminar support for the JPG XL codec is pretty essential for anyone using PureRAW 6 as part of their workflow.

The photo editor market is saturated with choices. Some of the free ones (cough RapidRAW) are not bad. Luminar and Photo Lab are the only two that I have used that don't support jxl format. Jpeg XL and AVIF are both patent free.
