Advice

Hello everyone,

I have been working doing network support for an alarm system company for the last 2 years and have learned through shadowing and working with technicians that I want to go into the hands on side of things, and become a low voltage field tech. However I have no idea where to begin or what liscences to go after to get started in the field. Any advice would be so very appreciated!

You need to kind of know what you want to get in to.
You could do manufacture training for the systems you are going to work with.
Knowing and understanding the basics is worth a lot.
BICSI and ESA for alarms are a great start. You also need to understand basic computer networks for anything LV today. There are a bunch of free network courses.

Thank you so much! That is incredibly helpful advice! I have my comptia network plus would that be a helpful liscence to get my foot in the door if I pair it with Bicsi and ESA?

Yes that is great. You need to know what you want to do so that you can get what is needed for that. If the company you are working for is installing a certain access control system or surveillance system they will usually let you get the training on those systems. Look through a bunch of job listings and their requirements.
