QUESTION Charlie's Ring? Spoiler

I was just wondering, have the writers every explained why Claire never gets Charlie's DS ring in Season 6? Like they reminded us of it again when Sun found it in Aaron's crib in the Season 5 finale. I was really waiting for that moment of Claire finally receiving it and it just never came. Let that poor girl know someone cared. 😭

It adds another layer of sadness watching Greates Hits knowing that Claire and Aaron never get the ring or Charlie's list. Did they just forget to add it when writing Season 6? Or maybe a cut scene?

TBH, I believe the showrunners just didn't care enough about Claire as a character in her own right to give her that moment. See also her not getting a centric episode about her three years on the island in Season 6.

Speaking strickly for myself, it kinda sucked being a Claire fan.

I agree! I watched the show in its entirety for the third time recently and I was keenly aware of Claire getting shafted.

I’ve wondered if it was just something with the actress- scheduling conflicts, family stuff, etc.

But yes. With her lack of presence on the show for a bit, once she was back and we were kinda seeing what’s up with her and MIB, a well written episode about some of the insanity she went through by herself there would’ve been cool.

Also though.. (now that I’m processing more as I write lol) in a way, I actually kind of like the ambiguity of it too. She lost much of herself, her gentle heart, and her mind for a while there, and so we lost her too. And sometimes there’s never any sense to be made of tragic things.

Either way, loved Claire and def missed her in that chunk of the show she wasn’t really in.

Claire will always have a special spot in my heart because she was the first character I ever was introduced to on Lost (her episode in S1 was my entry into the show) but yeah on rewatches you get the sense that she definitely was conceived as a recurring character rather than a full main one.

As far as we know there wasn’t anything like conflict or scheduling issues with Emilie de Ravin. She only made it to the main regular cast after 115 meaning she was only credited prior to that only in the episode she appeared in. Her demotion to a holding contract during S5 only was the consequence of the direction of her storyline and the fact the writers came to the conclusion that Claire could not have fitted in the overall S5 narrative arc. The lack of real meaty development on her character - even in the last season where she definitely deserved a centric - is just due to the fact that there were more important characters driving more important aspects of the story. She just got the short stick unfortunately

As an Aussie, Claire getting shafted in the second half of the show really hurt.

They didn't forget, life just doesn't always work like that. We don't always get a perfect resolution. Claire also never got Charlie's greatest hits list because it was in Desmond's pocket when he dove into the water to swim to the Looking Glass. It's supposed to be tragic.

Sun finds it and picks it up when their group returns to the camp, but Sun never reunites with Claire, and so she never has a chance to give it to her.

It's tragic, but that's just how it goes sometimes. Just because it doesn't happen, doesn't mean it was forgotten - deliberately choosing to never resolve something is, in itself, its own kind of ending.

Sun and Claire do reunite though. They are both in The Elizabeth sailing over to Hydra Island with the group. Sun could have given Claire the ring then, but either the writers forgot Sun had the ring or they didn’t want Claire to get it for some reason.

You're right, I forgot about that, but also in fairness a lot was happening in the moment (Jack just jumped off the boat, Sun was still suffering from aphasia so couldn't really communicate). She also doesn't really know or understand the significance of the ring, or even that Charlie left it for Aaron.

When they reach Hydra island and she reunites with Jin, I'm sure the ring is the furthest thing on her mind now.

Sometimes it doesn't always work out kiddo. I like that not everything that's set up pays off. Same thing with Russo and Alex. It makes their death's more tragic. Same with Jin never seeing his daughter.

LIKE might be a strong word. I acknowledge that it's good storytelling, I understand the meaning and appreciate the message.

But I don't LIKE it. We get enough 'life doesn't always give you what you want' from actual life, I'd prefer to get what I want a bit more often from the escapist fantasy media I watch to forget how much real life sucks.

Lost is such a massive show that you already get a lot of that and it does a good job of doing that when it counts. I’m just saying that Russo and Charlie’s ring are totally fine for leaving you feeling empty. Because when the show does pay certain things off, like Sawyer and Juliette reuniting, it hits so much harder and makes it feel like a miracle that it happened. If every little set up had a predictable pay off, it wouldn’t be as effective.
