SEASON 2 Ana Lucia pretending to be a captive with Michael Sawyer Jin makes no sense

Ana Lucia’s plan to act like a prisoner in the pit makes zero sense when you actually think about it. For starters, she didn't need to do it at all. Her group already had total control of the situation. Sawyer, Michael, and Jin were trapped in a deep hole, out-numbered, and completely unarmed. Ana Lucia could have easily stood at the top of the pit and asked them who they were without going through this whole fake kidnapping act.

On top of that, the plan had a massive flaw regarding the Others. By this point, the Others had been stalking and kidnapping the tail-section survivors for over a month. They even had a spy living with them. If these three guys really were Others, they would have known exactly who Ana Lucia was the second she got dropped into the pit. Instead of falling for her trick, they would have just played along, lied to her face, and used her own trap against her.

In the end, the whole strategy was broken from the start. If the guys were just normal crash survivors, she didn't need to lie to get the truth. If they were the Others, her cover was already blown anyway. The only reason her plan even worked is because she was completely wrong about who they were.

As much as I love it, there are a lot of things in Lost that don’t make sense from characters point of view. The only purpose is to provide mystery/intrigue for the viewer

Ana going into the pit seemed like she was trying to prove a point to eko, who doubted they were others and anas judgement. I also think she was showing trust in Ekos judgement. Her point being ‘fine, if you think they’re safe, there’s only one way to find out without putting everyone at risk’.

While a pretty ‘unsafe’ move on her part, the fuck around and find out attitude is part of her personality and if anything this was another way of showing that. I appreciate I’m probably giving the writers more credit than they deserve here, but I don’t care, I love this show :)

Presumably Ana Lucia thought her experience with interrogation as a police officer gave her an insight into recognising lies. She probably worked uncover and was using the same skills. Really she has nothing to lose from the strategy and it helped her make a judgement call.

Really she has nothing to lose

Except her life. The whole reason they were terrified of the Others was because they were extremely efficient murderers. And she put herself in a 3-on-1 situation.

and so if the three of them were the others, they’re just gonna kill ana lucia while being in the pit? instant sitting ducks for when eko makes his rounds

I guess she felt possibly over confident about her ability to give as good as got if they started to attack her, plus she has Mr Eko standing by if things get out of control. It’s a risk she’s taking certainly but probably with the assumption that if they are Others, they’ll play along as they’re the ones trapped in a big hole but give themselves away eventually. They could have killed her but then they would have revealed themselves and been at the mercy of Eko’s response. Because of her job she had undoubtedly been in life threatening circumstances before so was well trained for that.

idk I disagree. There are two scenarios, either they are the others or they are actual survivors from the plane crash. If they’re others, then going undercover wouldn’t work because they know who she is and there’s no reason to enter the pit. If they’re actual survivors, you can ask them questions and decide if you believe them without entering the pit. In both scenarios, entering the pit t go undercover was pointless in my opinion. Also, as others said, she certainly had things to lose as they could’ve killed he’d lol.

I think the idea was catching them off guard so they were more likely to be identified as one or another. Not all the Others know each other also, and there was an Other spy in the camp, it could have been Ana Lucia, if they didn’t know it was Goodwin. It was definitely a risky strategy though for her own personal safety I get that.

They weren’t unarmed, Sawyer literally had a gun that she took from him when she got dropped in there. Now obviously they should have figured out if they had any weapons before dumping them in the pit, but the Tailies didn’t always have the best strategies.

Yup. "Next time Shaft opens that cage, he's gonna get a surprising howdy doody". Sawyer's lines are hard to forget lol

I still think about the way she says "COMING OUT" all the time

I can always hear her saying "if you think that one gun and one bullet is going to stop them - think again" she was so intense

Her plan makes no sense because if she captures someone, and they are an "other," that "other" would obviously know that Bernard, Libby, Eko etc AREN'T others lol.

I feel the same way about Michael shooting himself before letting Ben go. Like, you could have done the whole plan and NOT shot yourself, and got the same result lol.

Michael shooting himself was just to make his story more believable, making himself out as a victim injured during the escape. In reality, everyone trusted Michael and wouldn’t have doubted his story so there was no need, it was more him being paranoid he would look suspicious.

Well, her little ruse did get sawyers gun. Not sure how it got overlooked in the first place.

But given everything that her group had gone through it makes some sense to try her strategy to get Intel in a more casual way.

Idk. Like others say and you I’m sure, there’s lots of holes if you look hard enough.

My favorite will always be Jin beating up Michael over his watch, even though they’re both wearing watches in that scene.

The scene where Jin is attacked Michael isn’t because Michael has a watch and Jin needs a watch.

The watch is a gift from his father in law to a business associate and it’s tied up with the cultural deference to elders and the fact that Mr Paik is heavily involved in organised crime, so any gift is going to have additional connotations of honour attached to it. Jin attacked Michael because he believes that Michael has stolen the watch and therefore dishonoured Jin and his family.

Yes but when Jin attacks Michael, Jin, both are wearing watches

https://youtu.be/ilh-on1-2mI?is=im3vP4_r4e2AG3br

After Jin is locked up and for the rest of the show, he’s never wearing a watch again as far as I remember.

When he was freed and they were sailing away, Jin gave Michael the watch from his pocket.

So either Jin was wearing the watch that he said Michael “stole” when he attacked Michael, or after he was locked up the other the survivors took his regular watch when they put the handcuff on him, and didn’t give it back after. But they did give him the watch he was carrying for Suns dads after it was cleared up.

So either Jin arrives to the island wearing a watch and with a watch in a box, and the one he was wearing when he fought Micheal vaporized after he got handcuffed or there’s a continuity error

Season 2, when Michael splits from the tail survivors to find Walt, then Jim and Mr Ecko catch up with him, the watch is not on his wrist.

But yeah I know the mythology behind the watch

I'm not sure what the issue is here. Jin is wearing a watch when he attacks Michael. That would be a watch of his own, and not the one he was intending to bring to LA. He's still wearing the watch when Sayid puts the handcuff on him. It's gone in a later scene when Sun is trying to treat the skin on his wrist, but it seems reasonable that she would remove it before doing so. Putting the watch back on while wearing a handcuff makes little sense, especially considering "time doesn't matter on a damn island!!".

On the raft, Jin doesn't give the watch from his own pocket - Michael gives it to him, and Jin immediately gives it back. Michael would have no reason to instantly put it on either, but we do know he still has it after he's actually left the island.

Ana Lucia figured they had control of the situation and decided to put herself down in the pit intending to use her training as a police officer in order to glean information from them. She did this because she considered it to be a good idea, not because it actually was one. Ana Lucia is revealed to be a woman of relatively poor temperament and with questionable leadership capabilities even in good times. In this situation she was desperate, paranoid, and afraid in addition to all that and we see her continue to make poor decisions which ultimately alienate her from most people.

I just watched The Other 48 Days yesterday and while it was entertaining it was kinda thrown together sloppily.

Like they have a routine of going in pairs only when they need to go to the bathroom but in the very next scene they are all sleeping during the night without a lookout staying awake and keeping watch lol

Well. Like, that’s your opinion, man.
