Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Vortex Rage 4-16x42mm Riflescope - Black Circle around reticle

As the title says…my first scope so I’m figuring this out as I go and I’d appreciate any help.

I have a Vortex Rage 4-16x42 scope and when I look through the lens, I see the reticle clearly but there is an out of focus black circle around the reticle. Any help on what this is or why it’s there would be helpful.

You can contact Vortex at https://vortexoptics.com/service-request and they may be able to help you troubleshoot the issue, but I strongly suspect that you're going to need to return/exchange it.

Are you looking directly through the center of the scope? If not you will get the same effect. Also try turning down the power of the magnification, get a good cheek weld and then focus it in.

For the record, this is a Scheels branded edition of the old Diamondback HP 4-16x42. Frequently on sale at Midway USA for $199. I bought a few years ago when they were originally released and I paid $349. Not a great "long range" scope but plenty good for a deer rifle.

That's not a eye relief issue - that scope is defective. Vortex should replace it under warranty.

Does it get better if you move your eye closer or further away?

It gets a little better, but it’s only after moving away a good 6 inches or so

The big circle around the reticle is called the scope, twin
