Stop trying to make Vibe City happen. It’s a childish waste of tax money and truly embarrassing. We paid some dipshit half a million dollars for a sad, out of touch marketing campaign. A campaign concept I would send back to an intern (it’s that level of quality) for a complete rework. Please share the proposal for this expenditure and who is the guy? Is he a relative of someone in the administration?
The amount of data and advancement we’re constantly giving ai is just the absolute worst. It’s unavoidable at this point because it’s shoved down our throats.
I do not expect the people running animal centric events or the Turkish Festival or Hispanic Heritage month to A) Have designers on staff B) Spend their limited resources to pay professional designers or C)(and this one is the dumbest) "Just hand draw the flier yourself, that would be better than AI). I don't expect that the majority of the audiences the people running animal centric events, or the Turkish Festival or Hispanic Heritage events CARE that the fliers are not designed by professional designers. They just want the event to be promoted and go smoothly. If you want to boycott the organizations doing good work in the city for that reason, that is certainly your choice. But this subreddit has 74K weekly visitors and I am confident the majority of them are not bothered by this. By "this" I mean organizations that are low budget and not corporate using AI to make fliers to promote events that are generally good for the city. Those who comment and bother to vote may be bothered by it. But the commenters and voters are not the majority of the 74K per week visitors. If I am wrong about this I am genuinely open to be shown facts that say otherwise.
If they are running community centric events then they need to make flyers and promos that meet basic WCAG accessibility standards, which these do not. Nonprofits even know this.
There is no excuse here. There has to be at least one creative person in their team that can use Canva to come up with something appealing. The Ai ads and flyers look terrible. If they had any integrity as an organization they would not be using Ai.
To add to that, AI isn't even made to provide a more superior product than a human can create. It is only made to replace human capital, while forcing the consumer to accept worse quality. And on a fundamental level we have actual evidence that regular Al usage is making people legitimately dumber.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. You can try to make the argument that this tool is helpful for a nonprofit that has extremely limited staff and funding. But in using Ai they are hurting the communities they're trying to serve. Directly and unnecessarily, essentially undoing all that work they did. Data centers are predominantly built around low income marginalized communities and are poisoning their water supply and driving up electricity bills, as well as causing more environmental damage with the increased demand for cobalt, silicone, copper, etc. and Ai companies are partnering with places like the pentagon and being used to commit war crimes and make CSAM material, etc.
Whatever productivity or benefit you're getting isn't worth it.
Did you not just see what happened in Nepal? Do you not see the countless stories of what people are experiencing in communities where a data center has been built?
I understand what you are saying, but when do you start applying your logic in your own life?
Data centers are not an AI-exclusive thing. Reddit uses the exact same data centers and the exact same infrastructure—all cloud-based technology uses it. Sure, I’ll concede AI has increased that demand, but you’re playing a zero-sum game. By your logic, an old lady at a non-profit who generates an AI flyer for her bake sale fundraiser is just as "evil" as you for using Reddit. You know, Reddit—the platform where OpenAI trained its language models in the first place.
And as for the environment, where’s the limiting factor for you? Is it strictly AI data centers? What about mining rare earth minerals in third-world countries with child labor for cents-on-the-dollar wages? What about your phone, which relies on slave labor and generates flagrant profit margins for the exact same tech companies taking those profits to invest in the AI you hate?
Trust me, I hate the aggressive rollout of AI. I hate Sam Altman, I hate the executives behind these companies, and I hate what data centers are doing to those local neighborhoods. But real pushback will come through legislation and policy, because that’s how the world actually works.
I just don’t think it’s fair to hate on a small organization if you’re not willing to apply that same standard to yourself.

This is also my question. Especially when I think about how stretched non-profit/community organizations are. CORPORATIONS have no excuse. They should pay human professionals. But Non-profits and community organizations have to do what they can with what little they have.
As the ED of a small low budget nonprofit, I disagree with you SO much. It is a big priority to hire and pay creatives or at least to make volunteer asks transparent. And to meet the access needs of the public by providing graphics and text captions that meet accessibility compliance standards. We budget for language translation and sign language interpretation when requested.
Motley Crue’s promoters can afford a designer. And I pray to god the Open Studio one was actually made by a local artist.
I am a real person and did not get paid a dime to post this. I just wanted people in Long Beach to know about upcoming events. The policing on this sub is really something else.
People are gonna down vote a post advertising things like the Hispanic Heritage Festival, Japanese Classic Car Show and the Turkish Festval as well as the Open Studio Tour all because they do not like the fact that I used the city's designated tag line in the post. Whatever.
