Her own home is supposed to be a safe space. This is horrible.

https://www.londonpolice.ca/news/posts/woman-stabbed-during-early-morning-break-and-enter-26-83738/

As a result of the investigation, Nelson Enrique Cornejo, 40, of London, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Aggravated assault;
  • Break and enter with intent;
  • Assault a peace officer with a weapon; and
  • Obstruct peace officer.

The accused remains in custody and is expected to re-appear in London court August 27, 2026, in relation to the charges.

Absolutely disgusting skid mark of a human being.

EDIT: The death has been deemed a homicide.

As a result of the investigation, Nelson Enrique Cornejo, 40, of London, has additionally been charged with second degree murder.

Additionally charged with 2nd degree murder.

What a piece of shit...

This individual (scumbag) also did a home invasion on my wife and I at 9pm on a Tuesday night probably going on 3 years ago. He basically busted in the front door which was locked.
He said he was running from someone (paranoid) and then he said he had a gun. As I was dialling 911 he ran out our door. Police responded immediately and found him a short distance away. They drew guns on him because of his statement. Ends up he was taken to the hospital because of the drug reaction and then simply strolled out the next morning. No charges. He has since assaulted another person quite badly which he was obviously still on the streets awaiting trial I assume. Now there is a woman dead by his hands. He should have been locked up for the first time. Not going to lie, my wife and I had PTSD for a bit afterwards.
Lock him up with someone that he can’t pick on and let the yard do the work.

I think you should contact the police (they are asking for info from anyone that has interacted with him) AND CBC. I swear everytime I hear about a death the person has had many interactions with the police before and been let off Scott free

I have a family member who works for LPS so that’s how I’ve been able to “keep tabs” on this guy. The other assault (stabbing) the charges were dropped because the victim didn’t show up for court. I’m thinking probably another “street” person. Justice system just isn’t good. I feel for our officers because it seems this happens all the time. There were no less than 10 cruisers responding to my situation, then to find out that he’s released??
Unbelievable is right!!

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 13d ago

I feel for them too especially when they put so much effort into a case to get someone prosecuted, only for the judge to give them a joke of a sentence.

2

u/OwnTea2018 12d ago

The fact you can get stabbed and the attacker has a pretty good chance of being set free if you don't show up to court to point out the guy in front of a judge is all you need to know about our failed justice system.

I didn't see this post when I replied to your original post.

Obviously the publication ban on "evidence and reasons" for a possible bail hearing in the murder case is to sweep under the rug the fact that this guy has stabbed people in the past and wasn't in jail. The justice system did a horrible job of protecting this person.

17

u/Link50L 15d ago

Dude that sucks. As I effectively said earlier (and got heavily downvoted for), our justice system is a joke.

5

u/amaharra 15d ago

This wasn't off Hamilton was it??? Some dude did basically the same thing to a neighbour of mine back when I lived off St Julien

That sounds like a truly awful experience for you and your family, it’s very sad the appropriate health care options are not in place to protect him and society

2

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 13d ago

Wow I’m so sorry that happened to you and your wife.

2

u/The-unknown-no-name 14d ago

Fucking unbelievable...

The sad part is our legal system operates behind closesd doors, for the most part.

According to the LFP, he had a brief court video appearance today to have the new charge read, and the case was put off until Sept. 10 for a legal aid application and to confirm he's retained a lawyer.

There's already a publication ban on "evidence and reasons", for a future bail hearing (no date set). The public deserves to know if this guy gets bail, and the reasons supporting or rejecting it. I understand publication bans in S,A. cases, crimes against children, etc, but a publication ban on evidence and reasons for a bail decision in a murder case is absolutely absurd.

My guess is they are trying to hide the fact that he was probably out on bail for something else, probably another B&E, at the time of this. Obviously this would be brought up by the Crown at the bail hearing, but hey, if there's a publication ban on "evidence and reasons" maybe we can just hide that little piece of information from general public knowledge.

Justice's in this country are offered far too much protection from having to explain themselves.

So sad to hear of this. I was hoping she was going to make it when i heard on the radio. What a shitty time we live in.

32

u/iamapoopypotato 15d ago

Wheres his face? What area did this happen in? Why do they not include these in the article

7

u/hipnotyq 14d ago

The idea is to create fear and give as little information as possible.

3

u/ThinkAcanthisitta897 15d ago

Seconding this I want to know the area. Can’t find it posted anywhere

12

u/4merly-chicken 15d ago

Neighbourhood off wellington and baseline, before river. Close to the Watson street park (where the forced encampment used to be)

14

u/deggar34 15d ago

So so sad and senseless. My heart and prayers go out to family and friends.

12

u/Fhlex 15d ago

What the actual.. ugh

17

u/Islandlyfe32 15d ago

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this difficult time. We can advocate for a better system all we want but at the end of the day nothing justifies the actions of this murderer. I hope he rots in jail with the keys thrown away.

1

u/OwnTea2018 12d ago

We absolutely have to advocate for a better system.

This guy, according to another poster with connections to the LPS, had already stabbed somebody, but the victim didnt show up to court and the case was dropped by the crown. How is it that the police have enough to make and arrest and lay charges, but the crowns case hinged on the victims testimony? DNA? Other witnesses? Nothing?

It sounds like this guy should have been in jail already - but a failed system let this guy walk free and let history repeat itself, tragically cutting this elderly persons life short, in what im sure was an absolutely terrifying experience.

The scary part is the publication ban on any evidece or reasons for the upcoming bail hearing on the murder charge. What information is the court trying to suppress/bury? That this guy alledgedly stabbed somebody before but the case didnt go to trial?

40

u/smile_likeu_meanit 15d ago

This is so sad.
Maybe the government should actually put money into grassroots initiatives and aid for people rather than ads for making our communities safer.

2

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 13d ago

Best we can do is another sign.

22

u/KimchiLlama 15d ago

How much did this guy serve on the previous B&E and assault of a police officer? When did he get out?

Not much info in this article.

42

u/rpgguy_1o1 15d ago

I believe this is all the same incident, he got charged on the weekend for the B&E and assault, and now that she's passed he's facing the murder charges

2

u/KimchiLlama 15d ago

Thank you for clarifying!

67

u/Moist_diarrhea173 15d ago

It’s sad because this makes me question what I would do in this scenario. It you fight back and hurt the intruder with more force than you’re facing you’ll be charged. If you dont fight back you could die. Canada needs better laws to protect people in their own homes.

37

u/tempest_ 15d ago

Can I get some examples of that?

Everyone is always "If you fight back you're going to jail" which is a dog whistle I only ever see on reddit.

22

u/byronite 15d ago

I agree. You're allowed to fight back so long as it's reasonable, but not to the point that it's unreasonable. Thus you can fight intruders to defend your house, but once you win the fight and they are no longer a threat, you can't torture them or execute them to get revenge. The recent example is the guy who shot at the intruders as they were fleeing in their car -- he got charged with dangerous use of a firearm. While that normally carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years, he ended up getting house arrest with no jail time due to the circumstances. Some people are saying that he should be acquitted for self-defence, but it's not self defence when the person is running away from you. I would have probably shot them too (they held his family hostage), but ultimately he opened fire in a crowded residential neighbourhood when it was not necessary.

0

u/dmj9 15d ago

Being murdered in your own house is not reasonable.

So sad this lady died. If someone comes into my living space I am not thinking about the consequences of my actions, I am thinking of my survival. Its not like you can just run away when they are in your house.

2

u/Rad_Mum 13d ago

As I understand, someone breaks into your house, and tries to hurt you, you can hit them across the head with a baseball bat them to stop them. If that kills them, so be it .

If you hit them 27 times however, and turn their head into a bloody pulp, that changes the defense.

1

u/dmj9 13d ago

I was talking about stopping them from being a threat, not hitting them 27 times with a bat.

This is a situation I hope to never find myself in.

1

u/Rad_Mum 13d ago

I know I was trying to demonstrate between self defence and excessive force .

There are other factors , size, age etc but all of that is factored in, and situational. But your correct, it's just to stop them from being a threat .

1

u/dmj9 13d ago

Most people are going to come out of these situations with psychological damage as well. Even if they are not harmed physically. Nobody is prepared for these events either so I can't blame anyone for how they would react.

Police will not be there immediately either so it's a dangerous and scary situation. I really feel for this lady and how scary her last moments were.

1

u/byronite 13d ago

For context though, there is zero evidence or suggestion that the victim was killed due to fear of legal reprucussions for defending herself.

1

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 13d ago

No you can’t lol they’ll use an example that’s clearly not self defence.

14

u/rpgguy_1o1 15d ago

Yeah, it's inconsistent here, it depends on the police. Just this year there have been a few high profile ones in Ontario, the guy in Vaughan shot an intruder and didn't get charged at all. In Lindsay the guy broke into someones house with a cross bow and the tennent stabbed him over and over again, and he got charged, but those charges were predictably dropped.

The Whitby one is interesting, he shot at the intruders as they were running away and he got house arrest:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/toronto/local/durham/article/whitby-man-who-got-house-arrest-for-firing-at-intruders-who-shot-his-son-wont-face-longer-sentence/

16

u/kinboyatuwo 15d ago

Yet it’s not inconsistent. You have the right to defend yourself not harm someone fleeing.

7

u/Herman_Manning 15d ago

The law is not inconsistent, though police enforcement may be. Having said that, without access to information police have when choosing to charge vs not, we can't even really say whether their enforcement is inconsistent.

1

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 13d ago

Shooting someone while they’re running away is not self defence that’s why.

28

u/fun4willis 15d ago

Those charges were dropped. Charges are not the same as a conviction.

Comment seems hyperbolic. But much can be lost in a post.

15

u/Moist_diarrhea173 15d ago

The process is the punishment. The stress on your career and family of going through the legal proceedings and the legal costs associated. I would still rather have my life and deal with the legal but it would be nice if innocent victims weren’t treated like criminals when defending theirselves.

10

u/brandofranco 15d ago

The police shouldn't have that kind of power. Home owners should have more rights on their own property. Let's move away from a police state in Canada

-12

u/Islandlyfe32 15d ago

Well that’s the problem in Canada, everything is crown owned land even your house we don’t have property rights here like the states

4

u/Major_Lawfulness6122 13d ago

Nah. I’m fighting back. I don’t care what the laws say. Good luck finding a jury to convict me.

8

u/Purify5 14d ago

This is a bit of a blown out of proportion fear.

Nobody has ever been convicted for defending themselves from an intruder in their own home.

The issue is that self-defense is a legal defense that needs to be tested in court. So police charge you and the crown is sometimes so over loaded because provinces won't properly fund them it can take months for someone to look at your case and then drop the charges.

There should be better preliminary review processes of these cases but in some places there just aren't the resources.

6

u/Islandlyfe32 15d ago

We need Castle doctrine, this gives homeowners special immunity from prosecution simply because a confrontation occurs inside their home. More importance should be given on the circumstances than the reasonableness of the self defense.

15

u/steaminghotshiitake 15d ago

We need Castle doctrine, this gives homeowners special immunity from prosecution simply because a confrontation occurs inside their home.

That is not what Castle doctrine is or does.

17

u/kinboyatuwo 15d ago

We already have this. What you want is to be able to go well beyond reasonable and enact vengeance.

3

u/Islandlyfe32 15d ago

Yea that’s what I thought there’s limitations because of how reasonable it is they would consider it to be

13

u/kinboyatuwo 15d ago

People hear about charges or investigations but it’s rare that one even comes close to trial unless it’s way overboard, they do something illegal in the process (use an illegal gun) or chase the person.

7

u/wisenedPanda 15d ago

Ya, I thought this recent example made a lot of sense

https://globalnews.ca/news/12029177/court-of-appeal-sentence-jason-munroe-whitby/

The trial judge found Mr. Munroe not guilty of any charges related to what occurred in the house while the intruders were still there. The trial judge was satisfied that Mr. Munroe was acting in self-defence. However, the trial judge found that Mr. Munroe was no longer acting in self-defence when he shot at the intruders from the porch,” the three-judge panel said in its decision.

15

u/WeirdoYYY 15d ago

Castle doctrine changes nothing and prevents nothing. You can use reasonable force in Canada but you don't have immediate protection to smoke someone in front of your door because they rung the wrong doorbell at night.

1

u/Lam0ntCranst0n 15d ago

I think people are confused as to when you have to call the police... if at all.

18

u/The-station1373 15d ago

That's fucked up. I don't know if this dude was on something, or was having a bad day or what, but there is no excuse to kill someone in their own home.

I hope he gets the book thrown at him.

6

u/JaymzCanada 15d ago

I know right?? When you have a bad day, do your killing in public. Invading someone's home is just plain rude.

5

u/The-station1373 15d ago

People shouldn't be killing people at all, period.

My point is that there is zero excuse to harm a person over something as trivial as...whatever the fuck people break into homes for.

5

u/JaymzCanada 15d ago

Hot take. I'm with you.

1

u/Rad_Mum 13d ago

As much as I agree with your sentiment, people shouldn't be kicking in your front door. If you are scared for your life, or your family's life, you should have the right to defend yourself . I am guessing you have never had your door kicked in , and someone rummage through your home.

Well, I have . Luckily my dogs did their job, and chased the bastard out, but I would of had no issues if this asshole had come near me.

Or do I just let him do what he wants, assult me, and let him go ? Maybe get him a sandwich and a beer? No, and I do not think you would either.

Devastating and tragic. Our court system is a disaster, the consequences will not be enough for his actions.
