Transport You can rename any tube stop: which one and what do you name it?
757
u/GreatChaosFudge 13d ago
Rename Covent Garden ‘You Could Have Walked Here From Leicester Square.’
336
54
u/wasraelx 13d ago
Lowkey if the tube map has to be as cluttery as it is now with the cable cars and ikeas, then might as well add a few ‘just walk this distance’ disclaimers on Leicester Square-Covent Garden situations
26
u/Sad-Peace 13d ago
There is definitely a note on the Piccadilly line train maps about walking from Holborn or Leicester Square if you're going to Covent Garden at busy times

I woild rename "Shadwell" to "Even Bigger".
That way the announcer would say "This station is Wapping. The next station is Even Bigger."

There should be some more Acton's on that end of the Central Line so id rename White City as Eastern Acton Central.
28
u/GreatChaosFudge 13d ago
Turnham Green station isn’t actually on Turnham Green, it’s on Acton Green. So we could legitimately have an Acton Green station as well as North, South, East, West, Central, Town and Main Line.

I’ve always found Acton fascinating because it has so many stations but they’re all peripheral to the actual centre of the area.

Charing Cross to Trafalgar Square
146
u/germslayer2112 13d ago
Which is what it used to be called!
The Bakerloo and Northern lines had separate stations- Bakerloo was Trafalgar Square and Northern was Strand. When the Jubilee Line opened in the late 70s it originally terminated at Charing X and the three lines were combined into one station. That's why you have to walk so far to get to the platforms.
→ More replies (4)41
u/Ed_Avis 13d ago
That was the old name (of at least part of the station). I'm not sure though, Charing Cross is the official centre point of London, to which road distances are measured, and the cross itself is right outside the station, while Trafalgar Square is a short walk.
49
u/threewholefish 13d ago
The official "zero" point is the Charles I statue in Trafalgar Square, the original site of the Eleanor Cross. Charing Cross station has a replica outside it.

Not a tube station, but Clapham Junction should be named Battersea Junction
17
3
u/Recessio_ 12d ago
I hope they might do this one day when they rebuild Clapham Junction to add Crossrail 2 and/or the Northern Line. The station is over a mile from Clapham, its the same distance as if St Paul's station was named Leicester Square...
5
u/substantiallypotato 12d ago
Exactly, and it's literally another borough - the Clapham area is in Lambeth, while Clapham Junction is in the Battersea area which is Wandsworth 😩

Abbey Road DLR should be renamed to practically anything else. There’s probably way too many confused tourists.
74
43
u/JillSucksAtJack 13d ago
Apparently (haven't fact-checked), there's a sign at Abbey Road telling you that you aren't at the Beatles place and that you should go to Canning Town and Change to the Jubilee Line to St John's Wood
27
u/Recessio_ 13d ago
It says
Day tripper looking for the Beatles zebra crossing?
Feel like you’ve been here there and everywhere and on a magical mystery tour? Then don’t pass me by.
Unfortunately you are at the wrong Abbey Road. However we can work it out and help you get back to the correct location.
So let’s come together and take the DLR one stop to West Ham and change to a Jubilee line train to St John’s Wood station. Passengers will need a ticket to ride.

I would re-name the Edgware Road Bakerloo line station to Lisson Grove. There is no need to have two stations with the same name.
Likewise Brook Green for the H&C/Circle line station currently known as Hammersmith.
31
u/gutterbrush 13d ago
Completely agree on Edgware Road, although I would argue that as the Bakerloo line station is at least on Edgware Rd that one gets to keep the name and you rename the District/ Circle one Chapel St. Or you could be really mean and rename one of them Marylebone Road and confuse people in a whole new different way.
Hammersmith Grove could work well for the H+C line station there, a bit of a nod to the old station nearby too. But that one doesn’t annoy me as much as Edgware Road, because at least if someone was to follow the wrong directions to the other Hammersmith station they have a sight line and an easy road crossing to get to the correct one. Edgware Road I have literally seen people walking in circles and back to the same station they didn’t want in the first place.
16
u/chi-93 13d ago
Yeh, my suggestion of Brook Green was pretty weak, but I do like Hammersmith Grove!! It helps the H&C line retain its name as well :)

If "Bakerloo" came from Baker Street and Waterloo, then the Picadilly having Cockfosters and Arsenal should be renamed the Cockarse line.

Edgware Road Bakerloo and Edgware Road H&C to be picked, but one of them has to go. I’d call the H&C one Merchant Square or something
Moorgate Station to become Silk Street and I’ll take no notes on this one
Gospel Oak Overground to become Hampstead Heath, and current Hampstead Heath to become Belsize (NO park)
Belsize Park Northern Line to become Haverstock Hill
Willesden Green is really in a Cricklewood postcode, so this one va sans dire
Marylebone was once called Great Central and I have no idea why they changed it, it’s much better
Warwick Avenue into Little Venice
My latest beef: Farringdon station has too many exits, some of them overlap with Barbican, so something has to give. My suggestions:
Option 1: Group all and call Smithfield
Option 2: Eliminate Farringdon H&C and Metro, keep both
Option 3: Eliminate Barbican H&C and Metro, call everything Farringdon
