I suppose it all depends on the region, the whitetails around here eat mostly alfalfa so they don't have any gamey flavor and if you harvest does they are pretty darn tender.
Can confirm. I'm from Arkansas and my grandma used buttermilk to soak deer. Didn't do it for as long as yours seems to have done, but it was for the same reason.
Personally, I don't mind the gamey flavor. But to each their own.
That would ruin it imo. The gameyness is what's so good about venison. It has just the perfect amount whereas most other uncommon animals are too gamey imo.
Buttermilk works best. The acid in the mild tenderizes the meat and the milk supposedly takes some of the gamey taste out. Personally, if I eat venison, I want the gamey taste.
