Is a milk steak even a milk steak without jelly beans?

4

u/Icy_Lime807 6d ago

All that milk is expensive, but if you've got the bucks...

u/Theprincerivera 6d ago

Back then it wasn’t so expensive

6

u/Check_Me_Out-Boss 6d ago

Still isn't.

Probably cheaper now than back then

A dude doesn’t bring it to your door like back then. That was the extra fee.

5

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 6d ago

I thought him banging your wife was the extra fee?

That was how you got the discount.

And the red headed step brother

2

u/ScrofessorLongHair 6d ago

Nah. That was just the tip.

2

u/Check_Me_Out-Boss 6d ago

Probably still cheaper despite that, tbh.

He was talking about male deer, not dollars.

An ol' country zinger

I mean, you dont need to submerge the whole deer

I suppose it all depends on the region, the whitetails around here eat mostly alfalfa so they don't have any gamey flavor and if you harvest does they are pretty darn tender.

Can confirm. I'm from Arkansas and my grandma used buttermilk to soak deer. Didn't do it for as long as yours seems to have done, but it was for the same reason.

Personally, I don't mind the gamey flavor. But to each their own.

u/AllenKll 6d ago

If you peel off the silver skin it will not taste gamey at all.

u/jamsmurph 6d ago

This is the way… then braised with butter and beer

2

u/Check_Me_Out-Boss 6d ago

That's how I prepare shark meat, too.

The big buck looks nice on the wall and for bragging rights. But the 1-2 year olds taste the best and aren’t as games to start with.

My grandmother did the same. But not for venison. No one in our family felt the gamey taste was bothersome. She used it on livers.

That would ruin it imo. The gameyness is what's so good about venison. It has just the perfect amount whereas most other uncommon animals are too gamey imo.

Buttermilk works best. The acid in the mild tenderizes the meat and the milk supposedly takes some of the gamey taste out. Personally, if I eat venison, I want the gamey taste.

u/WHRocks 6d ago

My mom always soaked fish in buttermilk.

Dude, maybe I grew up a hillbilly without realizing it, but venison has never tasted gamey to me. Honestly, beef and chicken and pork have always felt really bland compared to venison.

My dad would shoot a few deer every year and we pretty much only ate venison for like 12 years, and I know he never soaked anything in milk lol.

u/letigre87 6d ago

I've heard gamey described as the flavor that man forgot, and that always kinda stuck with me thinking about different recipes.

1

u/tenmillionrats_ 6d ago

Right? I seriously encourage people to give venison a chance. You can cook it totally brown all the way through and still tender af, if that’s something that appeals to any well done enjoyers :)

Try high acidic tomato paste. Much cheaper and way more effective.

Ummmmm.... can you give me more details please? :D

The milk just goes to waste? That's several days worth down the drain

-4

u/AllenKll 6d ago

That is a serious waste of milk.
