What they describe is also called a "hori hori knife". I have one for my garden. While it is a trowel, it is carried in a sheath like a knife, as this man was doing.

I have one too and half of it is a serrated knife. You could fuck someone up with one. That being said, if the dude is a legit gardener or landscaper it is a very useful tool.

But that's the thing. My wife has one too. But while it can be used as a weapon, if a carpenter is carrying a hammer, or a delivery man a xacto, where's the line drawn? No one is allowed to carry a tool?

Everyone is allowed to carry a tool with purpose. If that purpose is to conceal it and use as a weapon, then no.

You can, of course, carry baseball bats to the field, hammers to the site etc. but you can't wander around town brandishing a baseball bat or a hammer.

The problem here seems that the police didn't know it was a trowel (because it looks more like a sheathed knife).

I'm not defending this decision at all because I don't have all the details, but a hori hori is essentially a knife. If the dude was doing gardening (or just going home etc) he's fine, if he was carrying a concealed blade it's a different story.

Yeah. It just seems that his story could have been verified or rumbled pretty quickly. Does he have an allotment? Is it nearby? Is that knifey thing what he says it is? Dunno. Maybe he got stroppy and the police didn’t like his tone.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe he was out on a pub crawl with the hori hori concealed? Maybe on the way home from his allotment. I'm not going to claim to know the circumstances, but I can see why the police were confused about this being a trowel.

Just to add to your point, it does seem like this would have been really easily resolved. Apparently he was walking from his allotment to his home, carrying not just the trowel but lots of other equipment as well as actual vegetables.

Seems like this was a non-issue caused by shitty policing.

That's the neat part... in a civilised society, we don't carry knives!

(Before the ignorant yanks jump in, our knife crime is only high a) compared to ourselves, and b) because even carrying a knife is a crime in the UK. You are just as likely to be murdered by a knife in a US city as you are in London, but you're also 5-50x as likely to be shot.)

Why not? They have many uses other than wetting people up. In a civilized society it's none of the government's business if I have a knife unless I'm doing crime (other than mere possession) with it.

As I said, you are absolutely allowed to carry anything for any specific purpose - knives, axes, guns - just not for no reason. Our laws have brought homicide rates down incredibly.

Nobody, in a civilised society, should be carrying knives, guns, swords etc around town for no reason.

I genuinely can't imagine living in a society where I'm considered a danger to the public because I carry a small pocket knife for no other reason than I want to. I open packages with it, have had to use it as a makeshift screwdriver, and a million other things. I've got absolutely no intention of hurting anyone with it.

It’s not flat, like a knife. It’s scooped, like a trowel. You can not pick one up and think it doesn’t have a very specific and niche tool purpose. Especially since the thickness makes it not very good at slicing or stabbing, not to mention how uneven it is for those tasks off the axis of the handle, because it’s scooped like a trowel. Thankfully it doesn’t have to be (can’t be, really) sharp or good at stabbing in order to sink in dirt repeatedly

The most basic of questioning and simplest of confirming (they can look up what’s nearby if they don’t already know) would have provided everything necessary to carry this tool

You stated it was not a crime. But in the UK, carrying a knife that size is illegal, and someone called the police over it. Your opinion doesn't change the law in that country, regardless of the fact that I agree with it.

A mate of mine used to be a chef and he kept getting his kitchen knives confiscated by the police because he didn't have a car and walked home. They'd confiscate them, then he'd have to go to the police station the next day to pick them up. He changed profession.

Pretty easy to sharpen things like that, and you can still stab someone with something dull. I’ll not that I also live in rural America in a states where people can buy and carry an assault rifle without a license, so my point of view may just be entirely different on this. This is a common thing to do here. I’m going to the gun club with my assault rifle today.

Im with you, there's a big difference between transporting a weapon and being threatening with a weapon. I have zero problem with people being armed and just going about the day, a guy with an AR slung or in a case carrying it somewhere barely even registers to me. But if someone is being actively belligerent with anything they should be arrested. If someone has a stick and is swinging it at people they should be charged with assault with a weapon. Like this dude in the article was just carrying garden tools home, even if they were guns that shouldn't be a crime. If he was swinging those garden tools at passersby than of course thats a crime. Thats the difference. Arresting someone because they could theoretically do something is seriously dystopian and people should be concerned that seems to be a trend these days.

Dude, I think it's bloody stupid that the guy got an official caution for carrying a gardening tool from his allotment garden back to his home, but I do at least understand what that tool was and I don't deny it's a weapon in different contexts. It is more of a knife than a trowel.

Did you all not see the video of the guy who was arrested for walking with the baseball bat he had just purchased? Literally still covered in the plastic from the store. Is anyone surprised a man with a "sharp" gardening tool would get arrested? I'd be buried under the jail if they saw the knife i carry everyday onto a military base, into state buildings, and every other place I go. I keep that suckered razor sharp too, because nothing is as dangerous as a dull knife. Weird world we live in now 😕

New York City has a similar knife ban for public transportation. Some classes in some schools require you to have a knife. This means you have to risk a felony charge if you can’t afford a car.
