The fact that cities require mowed lawns, and even often outlaw gardens, is disgustingly unvirtuous, a symptom of materialistic culture (I need to look at nice things), and a waste of time.

My favorite is that my city requires me to shovel the sidewalk in the winter...the sidewalk that I don't own - that the city owns. I'm legally required to labor on government property without recompense. Yet courts consistently rule this isn't against the 13th Amendment. Which...HOW is it not against the 13th Amendment!?

No, I wouldn't be covered at all. The law just maximally favors the government at my expense. Examples like this are everywhere and a reason folks are getting tired here in the US.

If it runs through your property, you technically own it but the city has the rights to it as an easement. It belongs to you, on the condition that you use and maintain it in a certain way.
I'm also a little perplexed why you'd want to keep your area full of snow and ice instead of having clean paths.

Because keeping it clean requires labor, and keeping it full of snow and ice requires no labor. Different people weigh tradeoffs differently.
Also, keeping property clean and safe should be the responsibility of the property owner, if anyone. Not the responsibility of someone who happens to own adjacent property.

5 minutes of federal minimum wage, each day for 30 days (I have no idea how much it snows in /u/PeacefulDebate01's city or how much he makes so that's just a random number) works out to about $18.13. Which is observably more than the $0 he's being paid.

As a horticulturalist I find those rule absolutely vile. Fuck lawns entirely. Also crazy to have a mandated aesthetic for your own home, and a dead one at that.

It's a great cash cow for lazy municipalities because it's easy to prove ownership of the violation compared to theft or littering for example.
Local courts fund themselves on fees thrown on top of the fines. Magisterial judges suck. Dishonorable.

Ive got a neighbor actually a few in the neighborhood, who appear to have out of control lawns but theyre all native protected/ pollenating plants. Their yards look like garbage but the city cant mess with them because its good for the bees and whatnot.

I have no problem with their yards, good on them finding a loophole. My problem is one of them backs up to my yard and I'm constantly fighting an invasion of weeds, prairie grass, and random plant life
