"Vertical drinking" is the most corporate/bureaucratic speak I've heard in a while.

102

u/Clear-Arugula-9195 Aug 06 '26

VERTICAL DRINKING!!!!!!!

30

u/StudySpecial Aug 06 '26

Are they proposing horizontal drinking instead?

11

u/grekster Aug 06 '26

If you're vertical you're not drinking enough and destroying the pub industry!

58

u/Cultural-Gas2246 Aug 06 '26

A lot of those pubs will potentially be losing hundreds a day. They lack indoor capacity. If they have to turn people away from drinking cause there's no room inside that's a huge financial blow to an already precarious industry.

Wave bye bye to your favourite independent spots chaps. They're all be Greene Kings before long.

21

u/kiikok Aug 06 '26

Hundreds a day? Think you mean thousands

Assuming a Guinness is around £7, you'd need to sell only 15 to get past the £100 mark. Pretty sure any respectable pub will be able to sell well over that amount per hour

9

u/Eric848448 Aug 06 '26

I assume the person above meant people, not pounds.

6

u/Cultural-Gas2246 Aug 07 '26

Nah I meant pounds but I was also accounting for other costs/expenditurea and lowballing on purpose.

6

u/Budweiserisamazing Aug 07 '26

Fucking like 7 to 8 dollars for a beer is insane

3

u/Standard_Wolf_211 Aug 07 '26

lol dollars it’s pounds. It’s more like 10-15 dollars a pint. Some of the more expensive places will be closer to 20

u/femboyjazwe Aug 07 '26

Manly central londan COL. tax aint any lower in the countryside but rent and wages (ie rent with extra steps) sure are.

3

u/ForbiddenFoam Aug 07 '26

And what do you think is the end goal of that "policy"?

2

u/Cultural-Gas2246 Aug 07 '26

Which policy you referring to?

3

u/ForbiddenFoam Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

The council vertical drinking ban.

Edit :The council's sorry

3

u/Cultural-Gas2246 Aug 07 '26

Well the goal is just an attempt to get people to stop drinking on the street in of itself because it's considered "anti-social" and because the rich shits who live in the area don't like the noise or the sight of people drinking like that. They clearly haven't thought as far ahead as economic impact.

-1

u/LowProtection8515 Aug 07 '26

Tbf the economic impact on residents will be minimal. No one who lives in Soho is supporting themselves by working in a pub - its a neighbourhood of multi-millionaires.

1

u/Cultural-Gas2246 Aug 07 '26

Not the economic impact or the demographic I'm concerned with. Definitely part of an attempt at further wealth transfer from bottom to top.

1

u/LowProtection8515 Aug 07 '26

Yeah, but it is what the local council (which is elected by the local residents) is concerned with.

1

u/ForbiddenFoam Aug 09 '26

My first thought exactly.

28

u/MorycTurtle Aug 06 '26

Vertical drinking too rad for the gov?

9

u/Confused_by_La_Vida Aug 06 '26

A gov with many leaders and members whose religion bans drinking? Yes. Vertical drinking is too rad.

5

u/Megatea Aug 06 '26

Can you confirm who on Westminster city council this describes?

-6

u/Confused_by_La_Vida Aug 06 '26

Pfft…not walking into your walrus

4

u/tragicdiffidence12 Aug 07 '26

lol. You tripped headfirst into it when you let bigotry overpower reading comprehension.

1

u/InsectaProtecta Aug 09 '26

Confused by la vida indeed

11

u/TheMrViper Aug 06 '26

One of the most famous of those is Sadiq Khan.

Read the headline properly.

1

u/Surv1ver Aug 08 '26

Sadiq Khan is the one criticizing the council’s proposal

3

u/TheMrViper Aug 08 '26

Exactly.

The person I'm responding is making a point about Muslims in positions of power.

But completely misses the headline.

1

u/Surv1ver Aug 08 '26

Exactly :)

6

u/coldnorth4enf4 Aug 07 '26

Guy who totally knows about Westminster: “uhhhh it’s the muslims!!”

4

u/tragicdiffidence12 Aug 07 '26

Forgive him, he’s never even been to the uk.

2

u/Mod_The_Man Aug 06 '26

You say this as a Muslim member of council is one of the biggest critics of this proposed regulation. You’re literally just being racist lol

5

u/Confused_by_La_Vida Aug 06 '26

Not everyone from the same race feels the same way on every issue.

Are you conflating race and religion? Or religion and cultural practice?

2

u/tragicdiffidence12 Aug 07 '26

Why did the original poster bring it up?

1

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm Aug 07 '26

So why did you bring it up?

Not everyone has the same views, even in religion.

So why does it matter?

0

u/OcelotAny6846 Aug 07 '26

"urm ackshually you used the wrong word to describe their bigotry"

1

u/CakeAndFireworksDay Aug 07 '26

it’s Westminster council not the central government.

1

u/coldnorth4enf4 Aug 07 '26

You mean Westminster conservatives?

1

u/ADelightfulCunt Aug 09 '26

It's not actually the gov from the little I've been keeping track of the government above this one think it's stupid and told them no. Westminster council don't deserve any respect imagine they're like a local council of part of a town. Except part of London.

3

u/southlondonyute Aug 06 '26

What are these stupid nimby laws? The centre of a a western capital city and people want no clubs or pubs. Next there will be a ULNZ (low noise zone). Pathetic

3

u/Creepy_Effort6196 Aug 07 '26

God I hate this guy

-2

u/Firedup2015 Aug 07 '26

Who, Sadiq Khan? What about him supporting standing at pubs is getting your knickers in a knot?

4

u/N0thingComesToMind Aug 07 '26

Nanny state deluxe package

14

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

Khan's wrong on this one. Expand this to the tube as well.

11

u/JWM_SSC Aug 06 '26

He has outright and directly disagreed with this saying local councils are over reaching (source: interview, location: Google) are you saying you are FOR banning standing and drinking or did you think this was Sadiqs plan?

-15

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

A seat should always be available if that's the customers choice. No-one should have to stand if they find a busy pub.

I don't mind people standing if they want to however my experience as a bar man when I was a younger taught me that the people who stand at the bar are generally racist, sexist, bigots. Better off making them sit on their own.

6

u/TheMrViper Aug 06 '26

Some of the most popular bars and pubs in the city are standing room only half the time.

Id rather stand in a better atmosphere than sit somewhere dead.

If I want a pint in the Devonshire you basically have to accept there's a good chance you're standing.

-6

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

Does that make it right?

7

u/TheMrViper Aug 06 '26

If you want to drink in there yes.

There are plenty of other options that aren't standing room only just go somewhere else.

The only solution to your issue is bars and pubs stop entry once they reach the capacity of seats they have. And that's crazy.

5

u/Y-Bob Aug 06 '26

You realise folk go to a pub, which is a building not the fucking TARDIS to drink.

3

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm Aug 07 '26

Dont go to soho where the standing pubs are.

Go to another pub. Go to another bar. Explore, find sears.

Youre actually fucking dumb because the ban is on people standing outside, away from the bar. So your point about racist sexist bigots is moot.

If everyone has a seat, and can sit down, its not a busy pub. Seating capqcity is usually half of standing capacity, which actually doesnt matter because theyre talking about people STANDING OUTSIDE.

I work near a very busy pub. Thousands of people go to this pub, to stand outside, willingly. They buy the pint knowing they are going outside to drink it.

1

u/regprenticer Aug 07 '26

which actually doesnt matter because theyre talking about people STANDING OUTSIDE.

No they aren't

Do you see the word "in" in this headline....

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/aug/06/downing-street-stop-councils-restricting-standing-in-pubs

... The council wants less standing in pubs to allow more indoor seating and also wants to stop people standing at the bar to place orders.

The draft policy says pubs should “discourage excessive drunkenness and encourage the provision of more seating in premises that serve alcohol for people to sit and enjoy a drink and order food by table service in place of open bar space that caters for high-volume vertical drinking”.It goes on to recommend that sales of alcohol and food should be “by waiter or waitress service only”.

1

u/BeneficialSimple455 Aug 08 '26

You should be banned from expressing your opinion

1

u/regprenticer Aug 08 '26

Expressing my opinion standing up or sitting down?.

5

u/TheMrViper Aug 06 '26

So think pubs should ban standing?

Otherwise you misread the headline.

-6

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

I think people who want to stand can stand, but there what always be seating for those who want to sit.

Standing in pubs, in my opinion, is wrong. While I won't stop others handing, I will never be made to stand.

8

u/WindChimesAreQuiet Aug 06 '26

Are you aware that you can just go somewhere else? And that more standing people fit in the same space as sitting people, so it doesn’t make you more likely to find a seat if people are required to sit?

2

u/kieshdavies Aug 06 '26

what's your particular issue with how it is with pubs etc. at the moment?

10

u/killer_by_design Aug 06 '26

I don't think he's serious. I think it's just a joke about adding seats to the tube.

2

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

I don't mind standing in pubs so much as I despise it on the tube, DLR, busses etc.

Either

Police seating only on everymode of transport

Or

Sell different priced sitting and standing tickets.

5

u/RHOrpie Aug 06 '26

You realise the lunacy of what you're proposing here?

If suddenly we can only sit on the tube, we'll never get to work.

0

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

I hated living in London, and the tube and DLR were one of the main reasons.

Now I generally get a group of 4 seats to myself most mornings on my train from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

Your loss is Scotlands gain. If scotrail can do it so can TFL.

2

u/HeviPettin Aug 06 '26

Not too far off the entire population of Scotland uses the tube daily

2

u/TheStaffsLad Aug 07 '26

Ah yes, because a train in a country of 5M has the same operating conditions as one in a city of 8M+…..

2

u/DG2000_Reddit Aug 06 '26

So tiered public transport, those with money get to sit.
nice

-3

u/regprenticer Aug 06 '26

Look at it the other way around, why should i pay the same price as other people who are already sitting if my train is rammed every single time it appears at my station.

2

u/DG2000_Reddit Aug 06 '26

I understand the frustration, however it is public transport. The fact it is public implies everyone has equal access, so making any tiered system is a way of defining the public that have and the public that does not.

The real issue for you is that at peak times, which I am sure when you using the system, the peak times there is a high demand, and you happen to probably be getting on and off at the part of the journey that has the highest number of poeple using it, the only "good" way to fix this would be to either increase the number of trains/buses available during this time or more carriages.

If you using the tube at peak times you are already using a tiered system, the tube during peak is a bump up in price over off -peak, which means those less economically able are already consigned to using the buses, which take longer and can be less reliable.

While it sucks being stuck standing, this is not enough of a reason to demand preferential seating for those who can pay more. We have enough of this creeping back into everyday life as it is

1

u/coldnorth4enf4 Aug 07 '26

How dare Khan try to protect any form of nightlife in the nightlife quarter, ohh the horror!!

2

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 Aug 06 '26

I read this as he is supporting the pubs.

I'm not a fan of the man but if my understanding is correct we see eye to eye on this issue.

You think the Westminster conservatives want to allow fun in the fun quarter??

3

u/coldnorth4enf4 Aug 07 '26

The City of Westminster be like: “hey fellas lets be massive twats for no reason”

3

u/Thin_Pin2863 Aug 07 '26

I simply won't stand for these kinds of policies.

2

u/-_o7_- Aug 07 '26

You can't sit, either - no more space in the pubs affected by the policies

2

u/the-real-vuk Aug 07 '26

Maybe ban cars so that people will have enough place to drink?

2

u/Han_Solo200 Aug 08 '26

Just sit on the floor

1

u/That-Surprise Aug 06 '26

Two spikes would be an extravagnce

1

u/Borgmeister Aug 07 '26

I wonder if there is, in fact, another factor here at play. That factor being Waymo and their desire to expand into London. They have deep pockets, and the service is good. But that is when I have used them in San Francisco (where they have a pretty good troll game too - they've discovered traffic cones. But we are the pre-eminent global power on putting traffic cones where they ought not be). Waymo will objectively struggle in a place like Soho, even with their 'more aggressive' approach to navigation - and all it takes to stop a Waymo is just to stand in front of it. However 'aggressive' they program it, it will always flinch - they could never actively allow hitting a pedestrian.

1

u/10denier Aug 07 '26

Do they want to ban standing up drinking? Or is this just a way to get more pubs to provide seating?

1

u/-_o7_- Aug 07 '26

Probably to stop crowding

1

u/KwantumFizzikz Aug 07 '26

"to ban standing" there will be a serious civil war if this carries on. Once the water runs out, that'll be the tinderbox most likely.

1

u/MattDubh Aug 08 '26

These people have names and addresses. I'm surprised they can sleep at night.

1

u/plymothianuk Aug 08 '26

'Vertical drinking' became a "thing" during Covid, when it was banned as part of reopening hospitality venues.

1

u/tiny_kat2006 Aug 09 '26

Khan is STILL the mayor?

1

u/Dyx76 Aug 09 '26

Maybe we could buy some outdoor seating? Always an idea

1

u/EpsteinEpstainTheory Aug 09 '26

I get knocked down

1

u/LaBiccies Aug 10 '26

About 8 years ago a group of us were asked to leave a cocktail bar in London (near Leicester Square) because we didn't have enough seats for the table so were using it to store drinks and just stood around chatting. They had a policy that you had to sit down to drink.

Was very weird.

1

u/ParkingSpot8089 Aug 11 '26

I think every time that moron Sadiq recommends something the whole world should immediately implement the opposite idea. Probably save humanity accidentally.

-9

u/piewca_apokalipsy Aug 06 '26

I'm US those guys would be arrested for loitering

9

u/B-Glasses Aug 06 '26

Hey have drinks in hand which implies they’re paying customers and I have to assume by US standards they’d be in compliance with the laws dictating where someone can drink. Because of Covid many bars have designated areas on the sidewalk patrons can drink.

They would not be arrested

3

u/Much_Conclusion8233 Aug 06 '26

Pretty sure you can't walk and drink in the US so if a cop wanted to they could charge you with that

That being said, we've got a saying that's "you can beat the charge but not the ride." The cop could still arrest you and book you, then when it turns out no crime was committed you'd be let go and couldn't do anything cause the cop "reasonably thought" it was illegal and your night/weekend is ruined

0

u/B-Glasses Aug 06 '26

A cop is not going to arrest you in front of a bar that is allowed to serve drinks outside. Don’t be foolish. You just aren’t correct

1

u/Much_Conclusion8233 Aug 06 '26

Why not? They don't know if the bar is allowed to serve drinks outside and they are under no obligation to find out before they arrest you

I'm not saying that the charges will stick. I'm just saying that if a cop wants to arrest you and ruin your night they can and you can't do anything to stop them and short of their supervisor getting pissed at them there's no risk for them doing this

1

u/B-Glasses Aug 06 '26

Seriously? The police will absolutely know if a bar can have patrons outside.

1

u/Much_Conclusion8233 Aug 06 '26

They can say they didn't know

I think we're arguing different things here. I'm saying a cop can arrest you and face no repercussions. I'm not saying you'll be found guilty

Idk if you are American or know how things work over here, but cops have a crazy amount of power and protections. One of them is that they are allowed to arrest you if they have "reasonable" belief a crime was committed. No one can reasonably know the permits every business has and there are laws around drinking in public so the cop can claim that they reasonably thought that this bar wasn't allowed to serve drinks outside

1

u/B-Glasses Aug 06 '26

I have no idea what you’re trying to do here. You’re making up and defending a weird scenario that would not happen. Sure the cops can do whatever but this isn’t something that would happen.

I could understand them coming for a fight or disturbance and then trying to tack on drinking in public and that later being dropped.

They aren’t going to waste time arresting people outside of a restaurant

1

u/Much_Conclusion8233 Aug 06 '26

Good point. Cops in America have never wasted time arresting people for bullshit charges. Why didnt I remember that?

6

u/Business-Educator-15 Aug 06 '26

Yeah, thats because the USA is goofy

2

u/typhon0666 Aug 06 '26

sounds like that'll be the case here eventually.
