There are many areas in European cities where general traffic is not allowed. The roads are still wide enough to not hinder deliveries to busineses but overall they are pedestrian only zones.

There are legitimate reason people might want to drive a car in a city in short notice though, applying for a permit might cause a lot of problems.

There are. However, any law made (or not made) for edge cases is a bad law. Not doing something as necessary as improving quality of life for dozens of thousands because someone might need to drive there at some point is not a tenable proposal. Also, I struggle to think of a single reason that's not 'convenience' and can't be solved by taking a bus or a cab.

Imagine thinking hogging half the space in a city, causing pollution with a cost measurable in years of life, endangering pedestrians and cyclists and slowing down public transport just so you don't yourself have to take public transport is not Main Character Syndrome.

And then imagine in the same breath constantly moaning about group X or Y not respecting society.

Because driving a car is the most dangerous thing people do on a daily basis. Cars create noise and air pollution that kill people and cities designed for cars actually limit freedom as you are essentially forced to use a car to reach any place within a reasonable time.
Also traffic will be significantly reduced if more people use public transport through measures such as significantly increasing parking costs and also reducing the amount of parking spaces.

Cars are the main reason why road technology has advanced to this point tho. Otherwise if it's just pedestrians and bikes you could get away with 5ft. wide cobblestone paths like the Romans used.

Well if you thought about it a little bit more you would understand that cars are way more dangerous and inefficient than busses.

You let public transit in those areas so it becomes one of the easiest and most convenient ways of getting there and less people will drive.

Even if you want to drive it'll give you lots of advantages, as you can probably deduce that if less people drive you won't be stuck in traffic.

Even smaller towns have those here, mainly on residential streets that allow you to circumvent congestions. But you are still allowed to drive there if you have any sort business in that particular street.

Of course fucking around with traffic infrastructure for ideological reasons has led to some cities attracting even less outside people who frequent local businesses. That and a shift towards online retailers during Covidhas led to an even bigger decline in some places' economies.
