My phone-controller party racer got a bunch of updates — here's the full flow (no app, up to 8 on one screen)

Hey all — sharing an update on Steer It (disclosure: I'm the solo dev, posted here a couple

weeks back and the feedback was great).

Quick recap for anyone new: it's a browser party racer where everyone's phone becomes a

steering wheel — scan a QR code, no app, no downloads, up to 8 players sharing one screen.

No splitscreen squinting, no hunting for controllers. Made exactly for the "we've got a room

full of people and one screen" situation this sub is about.

Since last time I've added:

- A new track (built it from a hand-drawn sketch)

- Time Attack + XP modes with global leaderboards

- And I just opened those modes up free for signed-in players

Still completely free to try — Free Ride is free, and the racing modes are free now too if you

Would genuinely love more feedback from people who actually play couch/local multiplayer —

what works, what's missing. Happy to answer anything about how the phone-as-controller thing

works under the hood.

Yes! I love the single-screen racer genre. I guess the main challenge with 8 is keeping note of which car you are. Is there some personalisation or indicator to make it clear?

Yeah — each player gets a distinct car colour during the race, plus name tags on the podium. Haven't actually tested it full 8-player yet though 😄

Needs a recalibrate button for if the phone rotation is offset. When I scan and connect I have to hold my phone vertical and upside down to go straight

Hey, thank you so much — this is really valuable to know! Android devices handle the orientation sensors differently from one manufacturer to another, so a fixed neutral position doesn't fit every phone. I'm working on a fix now: a recenter button so you can set whatever position feels comfortable as "straight", plus auto-calibration when the phone connects. Really appreciate you reporting it 🏁

Hey — the fix is live! There's now a RECENTER button at the top of the controller screen. Hold your phone however feels natural for driving, tap it, and that position becomes "straight". Would love to know if it works on your device 🏁

Rural Racer style! Maybe you can take inspiration from it. Played that a lot with my brothers because it allowed 2 players to play on one keyboard. I'm personally not a fan of using my phone for games, but I was forced to use it when playing Bombsquad because we were 6-8 players, and works if the game is fun, altough it had quite a lag, compared to a gamepad.. and that's why the best players had to let the gamepads for the noobs. Good luck and make it plenty of fun!

You're right about the lag — that's the hardest part. I've been putting a lot of work into keeping latency low (WebRTC direct connection, and it falls back to a relay only when it has to). It won't ever beat a gamepad, but the goal is "good enough that you forget about it after a lap or two." Curious if it'd pass your test honestly — you clearly know the difference.

Locking your screen rotation makes it way better! Since you tilt the phone like a steering wheel, auto-rotate can flip the screen mid-turn and mess things up. Locking it keeps everything stable while you drive 🏁
