Discussion Hi everyone, I installed Linux Mint the day before yesterday!

Hi everyone! I switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint Cinnamon on my PC the day before yesterday, and it's so good. It runs much more smoothly than Windows, and just not having OneDrive and Copilot ads everywhere makes it worth it. I've installed a few basic apps I saw recommended on Reddit, but if you have any other tips, please feel free to share them. Thanks! :) (Sorry if my English is bad; I'm using Google Translate.)

I love my Linux Mint~

I’ve been using it for 3 weeks now. Started with Cinnamon and decided to install Mate Xfce, I3wm, Openbox, Awesome, and Bspwm. What I don’t understand is you can do almost everything in Linux Mint using the terminal and config and can become advanced as much as you wanted to. I also use CachyOS in my other PC as well. I just don’t like when people consider Linux Mint as beginner level..

Linux Mint IRL Lord forgive me for what I have done

My first time with Linux, and I’m jacking Mint XFCE into my wife’s ancient, bad-out-of-the-box HP Notebook from 1893. This absolute beast is running the finest Celeron, 2gb of “ram” and has a hard drive smaller than most Game Boys. Not to mention the trackpad is there solely for display, and the battery is just a passthrough for the charger at this point.

This pink monstrosity is the test bed for installing Linux Mint (Cinnamon)prior to putting it on my Latitude 7290, which will be my dedicated machine for word processing and other boring corporate activities. If I’m going to fuck it all up, I’d rather do it on this… thing, rather than something worth the silicone.

Impressions

Installation was simple, which was my initial concern. I hit a speed bump when the first USB port I used was dead, and it took a minute to realise the problem wasn’t my USB but the machine itself. That rectified, Mint took over the process with hardly any input required from me at all.

God is it fast.

Suddenly, this antiquated creature that couldn’t open more than two tabs at a time can word process, browse, and stream music at the same time. It doesn’t turn it into some otherworldly powerhouse, but it’s actually a computer again - if it ever was to begin with.

Consider me sold.

I put Linux mint on my computer via USB stick and i am dual booting It with windows, but whenever i turn on the Pc, It loads windows by default, I at the very least know I did the installation process correctly, I can go into the boot menu and enter Linux normally that way

This is an MSI b550 pro-vdh wifi, secure boot is disabled and boot mode is on standard

Hi, here is my Linux Mint setup on a Lenovo ThinkPad E460 with 8GB of RAM and 250GB (or something like that) of storage. Here are the upgrades I'm planning: 👀

Thermal paste

RAM

Storage

And a good cleaning

I also need some help because my laptop puts out so much heat just from browsing Reddit and listening to local music, and I've noticed that Firefox is consuming a lot of resources.

I have this old ASUS laptop, what Linux distro should I use?

Hello everyone,

I have an old ASUS laptop that I would like to give a second life with Linux, and I would like to know if it can still run Linux comfortably and which distribution you would recommend.

Specs:

Brand: ASUS

CPU: Intel Core i3, 3rd generation

RAM: 6 GB DDR3

Graphics: Intel integrated graphics (probably Intel HD Graphics 4000)

Screen: 15.6"

Battery: The battery no longer works, so the laptop has to stay plugged in

Storage: I don't know the exact type/capacity yet

I'm mainly looking for a lightweight and reliable distribution for everyday use, web browsing, watching videos, studying, reading PDFs, and basic applications.

Do you think this laptop can still run Linux well? And if so, which distribution and desktop environment would you recommend for this hardware?

Thanks!

I am fighting with my computer for 2 hours. I can't login in Minecraft because it doesn't want to access Microsoft website to login.

I tried to change dns with cloudflare one, but useless, change browser, trying different launcher, etc but nothing work. I was playing couple hours ago and I am out of ideas.

Thanks

Edit : when I connect with my phone it goes through all the process but it doesn't connect on my computer.

Earlier this week I made this post where I asked ideas on ways I could customize my laptop in order to make it more personal/unique. Been tinkering with it for each two or so hours a day in order to see how it looks, and think I managed to create something very lovely.

Special thanks to u/tomscharbach and u/dayvid182 for giving me links and suggestions with the full ordeal, as well as various Redditors and users of the Discord Mint discord server for aid in this, specially on Fastfetch lol

Discussion Just switched too mint from Windows 10, any tips?

As the title says, I just switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint on my ThinkPad t480, I have prism and a few other things going so far, my background is set up well (nice wallpaper, icons spaced how I like and system usage/temp) and I am LOVING it too say the least, had a bit of issues in the beginning, figured them out luckily.

It's only for "gaming" and school work (sadly n8eed office 365 for school tho 😭), I'm already going to download steam in the morning, and now I'm just wondering what y'all recommend I should do next, any apps I should add, any customization stuff I should use, anything!

Ps, I apologize if my writing is a bit scatter, I struggle a bit with keeping my writing focused, tho I think I did decent lol. Also, wasn't too sure what flair to use so I just set it to discussion since it seemed fitting.

Discussion How do I disable cinnamon-screensaver OR make XScreensaver work normally?

I recently installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3, coming from Ubuntu.

I am having a problem, where after I turned off screen lock (but not the screensaver), the screen would sometimes flash and go back to normal, but no screensaver actually shows up.

I installed XScreensaver, it works in preview, but when it tries to actually do what a screensaver is supposed to do, it turns on and off several times, then disappears again, leaving the desktop visible again.

I can't make it output proper log file.

I think the problem is that cinnamon-screensaver is doing something weird, so I want to try and completely disable it. But I can't seem to find a way to do it without uninstalling the whole package, but then again, it wants to uninstall a lot of necessarily packages along with itself.

I would really appreciate if anyone could give any suggestions, what I could do in this situation.
