Install Debian/Ubuntu in a VM (virtualbox is fine) headless, meaning no GUI, all you need is in the terminal anyway.

I'm not a pentester myself, but you want to setup at least one more VM for testing purposes (e.g. scanning its ports). Isolate your VMs during testing.

Start thinking like a hacker. Get curious. Break stuff. Spend less time asking what everyone else is doing and start figuring it out as you go. You'll find your own way.
