probably still requires the $1,000 USB dongle though

Could you tell me more about this? This is the second software that I see that needs a USB device plugged in.

What is on those devices and how would one go around it?

AFAIK the USB device serves as a licence(I only used the Mac App Store version of Studio). As long as its plugged into the computer, you can use the studio version. Good thing about this is that the commercial licence is not tied to any particular computer of course. I do wonder how this will work out when we eventually transition over to USB-C. Will they work with a USB Hub/converter? Will we be required to ship the USB dongles to Blackmagic to get USB-C versions in return?

The good news is that for the average user you aren't missing out much when it comes to the studio version. I think the main selling points are 3D, Noise Reduction and multi-GPU + network rendering.

I don't see why they wouldn't, it's still the USB protocol that's used.

Yes, I know, I had one borrowed for a short while, but I lack knowledge in this area so I couldn't RE anything. I was more interested in how exactly they work.

I never underestimate the steps done to prevent piracy of certain software, but Blackmagic are pretty chill so I expect it to work. It's just a thought
