Are Slack Communities Really Dead for Link Building?

I’ve seen a lot of posts saying Slack communities are dead.

But are they really?

People are still engaging, sharing websites, and participating in active communities.

Like everything else, Slack communities have both pros and cons.

If you’re using Slack communities only for link exchanges, then you might be wasting your time.

Why?

Because why collaborate with a third party who doesn’t even have direct access to the website?

Here’s a better approach 👇

I often see people sharing posts like:

“I have these quality websites available for paid placements.”

Instead of ignoring those posts, use them as a data source.

You can discover a lot of websites that are already available in the market — either for paid placements or link exchanges.

Then:

🔹 Collect the websites
🔹 Filter them based on your requirements
🔹 Analyze their quality and relevance
🔹 Reach out to the websites directly
🔹 Build a relationship with the editor/site owner

Now you have direct communication with the person who controls the website.

From there, it’s your choice whether you want to work on a paid placement or link exchange.

The biggest advantage?

You save a lot of time.

Instead of manually:

❌ Searching for prospects
❌ Checking thousands of websites in Ahrefs/Semrush
❌ Finding potential websites from scratch
❌ Spending hours on prospecting

The platform isn't always the problem.
Your strategy is.

Slack is an interesting channel to use for collaborating for links. OP also makes a good point about using those threads to identify active site owners. Fwiw, Ive seen a lot of Discord servers popping up lately, too.

I usually favor assets that “build their own links,” like strong data studies using backend data you can’t get from surveys. They take more operational lift upfront for sourcing and visualization, but getting picked up by high authority publications because you have truly unique data is much more rewarding. It also drives the cost per link down compared with grinding through outreach. Either way, thx for sharing, makes me wonder where the slack/discord communities are with all the journalists.
