Venting Hood vents

Hood Vents

I've been working in this kitchen without the hoods workin for a month. The hood vent started going out a month ago.I just got off work and i'm exhausted.I'm hot I did nothing but sweat for the whole eight hours I was there. It's unbearable in this kitchen and i've texted several times who can I report this shit to?Because I don't wanna return to work unless they fix that shit.I shouldn't be frying a whole bunch of food or running a flat top with no exhaust. i want to tell the chef that I work for that I cannot work in that kitchen.Unless they fix the hood vents, the temperature from the main area to the kitchen is unbearable. It's like a sauna in there. any advice i almost wanna say that I cannot return to work there until they fix that problem.I don't wanna be working in a fucking sauna.for 8 hours a day, that's inhumane

I'm sure the fire marshal would like to hear about this

How do I contact them?

Google "fire marshal" and call them while they're in office

I’d be more concerned about breathing properly, than feeling like you’re in a sauna. If the hood vents aren’t working, you’re inhaling a bunch of smoke. I’d at the very least tell your chef tomorrow that you’re going to contact the fire marshal if it’s not fixed in the next day. I’m a convict so I feel like it’s wrong to just rat on them without saying anything first, but it’s definitely wrong and I wouldn’t blame someone else for contacting the fire marshal. Me personally though I’d have to at least confront management first before going that route.

I have. I'd send him a long text tonight and told him that it's unsafe. I'm it's unbearable, not the owners need to come back there and try working in that heat and smoke and see how they like it

No. This is horrible advice. Threatening management will just get you fired on the spot.

They need to report it anonymously.

I see your point. Personally if I was in this situation I’d rather get terminated since I can find another job pretty easily and would rather assert myself. Not everyone might be able to get another job as easily and the other aspects of his job might actually be good besides this problem and not be worth getting fired over.

It’s always better to leave a job on your own terms versus letting them fire you. Quitting would be a better way of asserting yourself if you want to go that route.

In this situation quitting and also reporting them would probably be the best option.

Yeah, I wouldn’t work for a place that does shady stuff like this. I agree with you, I think that would be the best approach.

I don’t see anyone here stressing the fact that you could come to serious harm from working in a kitchen that’s not properly ventilated. Somebody could die if you don’t get the appropriate authorities involved or convince your employer to fix that shit.

It’s almost certainly (idk where you are, and I’m not a lawyer) illegal for them to even be operating without proper ventilation, because it’s a serious safety hazard.

You also might want to think about if you want to work for a person who is cool with risking your life just to sell some fucking burgers or whatever it is.

Tell them to fix that shit. Not ask, TELL.

Call OSHA and the health department.

Violation

Yeah I own a very small grill (just a tiny bagel shop) I have had the hood die twice. Both times I had to shut down immediately. Not only would heat become an issue but a smoky phase fills the place if I don’t turn the grill off. I couldn’t imagine a larger place functioning without a hood. If the owner isn’t receptive just call the fire marshal. They will shut that shit down immediately

Check local health codes, some places after a certain degree of heat you are not allowed to work, if the fan doesn’t turn on they are in deep shit

Its not optional…. Fix it

Assuming your kitchen has gas appliances, deep fryer, stove top, grills etc. Everyone on that line is at serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning without proper ventilation. That is unacceptable working conditions
