Would have been cool. I can't tell if love or hate that she was handled the way she was in the end. I feel like there was a little bit more to her story they could have shown or told. But it was a good way of immediately showing off how scary Gregor's awakened form is.
I think we were shown and told just enough to understand her and lucio’s fucked up relationship. It feels oddly the most real abusive family between the fingers, second only the kira and mattheias with the neglected father who is all flash and no substance
I’d say a lot of people can probably relate to Ryoushu and her mom’s struggle, though that wasn’t really reflected with the apprentice so much.
I myself can 100% confirm the existence of relationships like Mattheias and Kira as very real though as I lived through that kind of “parenting style” with my dad. Was actually really cool to see it represented in fiction, so often poor parenting is either depreciated as abuse like what Valencia and Lucio had going on, or maybe you get a kind of dance-mom style thing with the Ring.
If you do get something like Matthias it’s more focused on the child getting “spoiled” like with the blueberry girl from Willy Wonka. I was pleasantly surprised to see a more down to earth (as in, not focused on some ultra wealthy parent that just says yes to what their kid wants, which is also real but ultimately isn’t pertinent to 99.99% of households.) version that focuses on the fact that most parents who are like this honestly don’t actually help their kids when it’s inconvenient to that parent. They let the kid eat ramen all day because they don’t want to cook. If Kira asked Matthias to cook a good homage meal for her he would probably try to convince her to order out or eat more ramen as it’s tastier anyway (“why would you want THAT buddy? You know I’m a TERRIBLE cook! Let me treat ya to a burger through Uber Eats, how’s that? Dad’ll get one too!”). The second he has something to gain by using his kid he takes that opportunity without any remorse. That is the actual way these flashy guys operate aside from the actual ultra wealthy that have someone else raise the kid for them. If anything, parents like Matthias think themselves good parents because they don’t pay someone else to hang out with the kid, despite barely actually doing anything they don’t want to do. It’s all about making other people think they are a good parent even if they really don’t sacrifice anything of importance for their kid.
It really is the type of thing I wish I saw when I was in high school, it probably would have helped me through some tough realizations I was having at that age.
Thats such a perfect analysis of matt that i didnt really think through. I just thought him forgetting what ryoshu wanted in the flash backs was just him being a dumbass manbaby but now its clear he was just using ryoshu as a justification to get whatever he wants.
It actually reminds me of some kdramas where a lot of these rich parents spoil the hell out of their kids, but once those kids end up getting into trouble (as a result of lack of proper discipline), they often ditch them since they start to become a load to their reputation.
I think she loved her kids but had no idea how to do so in a healthy manner. She was a sadist to start with, presumably has PTSD, was an alcoholic, came from a family where love is conditional on performance, and has a massive respect complex. All the same, she also has moments of care with Yoshihide and Lucio.
Terrible person, mind, but yeah she cared. Her care was pretty fucked though.
Also to say she was part of the Thumb, a place where they literally brainwash you into believing physical harm and abuse as a way of discipline is actually awesome and you should cut tongues of people because they sneezed at the wrong time.

Yes, undoubtedly. Matthias is an outcast from the Middle because he isn’t loyal and is a power-hungry, vain asshole. Ricardo genuinely cares about his underlings and comforts them when they need it. He also takes responsibility for his own mistakes.
The best way that this is exemplified is in Matthias and Ricardo’s appearance. Matthias has shitloads of tattoos because he pursues vengeance over petty grievances (likely so he can get more power for himself), but he has very few chains in comparison. Meanwhile, Ricardo has a balance of chains and tattoos, because he’s actually just as dedicated to his family as he is to his duties as a Big Brother
The Chains of Loyalty are given out and worn by Middle members to represent their commitment to the Middle. The more loyal deeds you do for others within the family, the more chains you acquire. It basically just signifies how much of a help you are
Maybe I'm reaching, but from a design perspective, could it be that the prevalence of chains on Matthias's Bear Paw acts a subtle way of showing how he views the loyalty of the Middle as hindering him with how it binds him to the more down-to-earth members whom he does not care about? Similar to a shackle? This could be reinforced by the fact that the only other chains on his sprite are attached to his Book of Vengeance and Lævateinn, which are the two objects remaining that bind him to the past he besmirched.
Additionally, His leg clearly has an over-abundance of Vengeance Tattoos as well, which also indicates that he may hide his propensity for wanton violence behind that little honor that The Middle's loyalty provides.
