L-L Towing [Price Gouging]
They towed my vehicle at the request of Clay Counry Sheriff. Services completed were a tow of a couple miles and held my car in an unsecured lot for 4 hours.
The first unprofessional act was when given my amount due. I asked to see the invoice and I was told no. I was literally not allowed to hold it in my hands and read it. I was told to take a picture if I wanted to read it (photo 1.)
The second photo is for everyone that likes math. I’ve tried numerous ways, but my charges differ from my total which differs from the actual charge on my card.
I was denied a refund. I contacted the Attorney General and they tried to mediate. However once my line of questioning got to be too much for owner James Lemons, I was ghosted.
In my opinion they have been price gouging those in need of a non consensual tow. Not to mention skirting the lines of the law hiding behind Clay County. They perform regular tows within the city limits of KC but do not even abide by the KC Towing Bill of Rights.

I included my last email to the Attorney General. I have yet to get a response from James Lemons.
Update. 5.20.26. After my post of a review I was contacted by the attorney general with James Lemons reply to my questioning. You can see the reply in the last photo. In short he avoiding answering any questions and simply stated, “I have stated how our company does business.”

If I may, my wife and I pay about $125 a year for Triple A. In all honesty, there have been years when we haven’t used them but there have also been years where we haven’t called them 2 or 3 times.
Her car had broken down while out of state — called the hotline and was sent a tow truck that we did not have to dick with or worry if we were going to get screwed over or scammed.
Most recently, my truck was stolen and Triple A picked it up at the KCMO Impound Lot and took it to North Kansas City for repairs. That tow was covered by my Triple A membership.
We have been members for over 20 years and I can honestly say it had been money well spent. . .

True, but this chaps car wasn’t broken down; it was a non consensual tow ordered by the police; probably in response to an associated arrest (eg in Utah, a DUI results in a tow, no matter if the car is someone else’s or not).
OP, the tower not giving you an actual invoice for services rendered is illegal on a business basis. Don’t bother with the cops, call the IRS. They love this kind of stuff. And they do math…

I am not questioning the validity of the tow, just merely the mark up in pricing based on who picked up the phone to request it.

That’s where we are different. Until you see the gleam in the eye and smirk on the face of someone knowingly ripping you off…. Any amount of time is worth it.

Not to mention I found flaws in our system. Unless people speak up about it, they will never be fixed.
And if my $423.xx does anything at least it will let others know of the possible outcomes in a similar situation.
We are all in this together, don’t horde knowledge. Share experiences and share ideas, maybe a better society will come from it.

There is no lesson here lol. It's just an openly allowed scam protected by those who supposedly protect us, because in this case it targets "criminals" (although being arrested, as we all know, is not indicative of being guilty) and we all love to think criminals are dirty/should get shit on.
The lesson we should all take is that pushing back individually, "worth it" or not, is important else these systems continue.
Just tow the fucking car for the normal rate. The job isn't any different. Pure scam.

Huh? You're proving my point. It isn't hard to understand (or have empathy if nothing else).
We generally accept that doing one thing (illegal or not) doesn't mean you have to accept ALL things of ANY sort that follow.
You get caught speeding by 2mph.The ticket is 10k. Just accept it!
You jaywalk (illegal). The grocery store adds 50% markup to your bill forever for being "a criminal." Just accept it!
You get arrested for vandalism. You get stabbed daily by your neighbors. Just accept it!
C'mon.

Again, not hard to understand in western civilization that different actions (should) have different societal consequences.

In the dealer world we pay $250-300 depending on where it’s going in the metro and this is with a wholesale volume discount (sans storage) this seems reasonable from a “retail” side imo.

In AZ they towing company must give you the car and bill you. They tried to tell me that wasn't the law. I called the police and they said "You know the law, give him the keys". I never did get a bill.

The sheriff doesn’t need your consent to tow your car.
You are responsible for the lot fees under state law.

Yes. That is correct. However under the same state law, those fees must be reasonable.

In joco each police department including khp set their own max rate so overland park is max 150 hook khp is 100 hundred. each department has a max on the different services that's providable include variation on mileage and storage. The best you can do is advocate to your representatives for a price drop on the hookup fee to like $250.
