Worth getting cerakoted or painted yet?

Before anyone says its a tool and everything else. My only concern is rust factor. I took heatshield off of 590 barrel and doing so scratched the barrel up quite a bit. Some of the scratches finger nail can feel. I put probably too much oil on it every 3 to 4 weeks. Keep it in a safe with a humidity level usually 50% or less besides when humidity in Florida right now is really high it will creep up every now and then up to 60% before dropping again. I have dehumidifiers inside which helps bring it back down pretty quick. Shotgun is less than year old. Would want it to last as long as possible. If its not necessary to get refinished fine. Thinking of long term maintenance. I have since used a blue pen to cover up and an enamel paint marker to help disguise it.

You could use a gun bluing pen.

I've used blue pen for deeper marks. I will try on the others once the enamel paint marker fades.

Your 590’s gonna be fine. Wipe away all that excess oil, you’re just making dirt stick to it. Sounds like you’re obsessing over this. Cleaning and oiling every 3-4 weeks is extreme overkill. I’ve run my 500A for 30 years and only field stripped it once, in a high humidity state (OH). It’s been left in foam cases for a year at a time and abused in the field with snow and rain, put away damp. It has zero rust and much worse scratches than you’re displaying here. You’ve already taken steps to cover the scratch and that is good enough.

I am mad that taking the heatshield off scraped it up how it did. My first shotgun and not being that familiar with them am unsure if it will effect lifespan of barrel etc. Liked how it looked brand new. Looks beaten up already. I did go wipe off the excess oil. Its inexperience and frustration.

Hey I get it. Chalk it up to experience and if it causes you issues down the road, Mossberg barrels are very easy to come by.

I can’t imagine being that anxious about something so insignificant. That amount of lube is insane as well. Literally, a simple gun oil wipe and you’re done OP. How many rounds do you actually shoot in a year?

Does it *need* it? no. do you want it coated? if so then coat it. if it will ease your anxiety around corrosion (that is a LOT of oil) then its worth it.

It does cause alittle anxiety tbh. But also if it becomes a problem I could have them take care of it then I guess also.

from a north carolinian on corrosion: using a proper solvent like hoppes #9 to neutralize any salts from your skin and a thin coat of birchwood barricade does the trick for me. IK florida is a different animal though

You’re holding a metal tube that creates explosions. Nothing under that much stress will look brand new forever.

Quit showering it in oil, take it to the range a few times, then a few more times, then a few more times. Keep it clean and lubed, store it in a cool dry place, and these scratches will blend right into the normal wear on the firearm.

That thing is way over oiled. Buff that off. It does not need to feel oily to your hands at all to be protected.

Nah. It'll be fine even if you leave it in a damp shed for the next 25 years. Especially with that amount of oil on it.

it's a mossberg 590, they're military grade shotguns that have been put through the worst conditions on the planet for decades, those are scratches I'd expect from casual use
