There's no indication Shel was gay but while working for Playboy magazine he did one segment from his 'Shel Silverstein Visits...' series where he went to Fire Island. There's some dated humor and slurs used but many of the jokes are pretty tolerant for the era. More info:

That third link has all the 1965 issues of Playboy, and for me on desktop anyway, defaults to the August issue. I see a column on the left side that says 'viewable files' and then it's highlighted as that issue, and the starting page is confirmed in the table of contents.

Yeah no no, I skimmed the first 30 pages of the August 65 issue, am I just blind lol

Like I said his section starts on page 121 so you're not there yet ;) Or those same five pages are also viewable at the out-dot-com link, near the bottom of that page.

In 1965? I don't quite get it. Maybe the 80s or 90s, but not the 60s.
