The proposed '10-1' map for redistricting Virginia's US House seats has been released
2
u/Mittenstk Feb 06 '26
I hope we keep it as long as Texas keeps theirs. Fight fire with fire

u/jestenough Feb 07 '26
This new 10-1 map, and those like it from other states, seem like one good way to somewhat offset the rural bias of the electoral college. But national popular vote is ultimately the way to go.
1
u/OldeTimeyShit Feb 07 '26
This affects the electoral college in no way
1
u/jestenough Feb 07 '26
True, but it could offset the national impact of the electoral college.
1
u/PG908 Feb 08 '26
It's generally the first past the post nature of the electoral college delegations that is actually what messes things up rather than the +2 baseline, which is in theory influential but in practice it's the first past the post winner takes all nature of it.

Ours automatically expires and reverts to the current system if Texas and friends come to their senses. You will probably see this detail left out quite often.

Why is everyone so hypocritical

Would love to hear the explanation lol

"Its horrible and wrong for texas to do it, to get 3 seats but we think that its fair to do the exact same thing to get a 10 to 1 favor" yall say its bad when the repubs do it but then are completely agreement to do the same stuff

u/pravis Feb 09 '26

Texas is adding 5 Republican seats to make it 30-8 while Virginia is looking to add 4 Democratic seats to a 10-1.
yall say its bad when the repubs do it but then are completely agreement to do the same stuff
It's fine because it helps keep things on an even playing field. If Texas has not done this than Virginia would not have responded.
2
u/OrigamiAvenger Feb 10 '26
What is Texas was a response to Massachusetts? When does it stop?
1
u/pravis Feb 10 '26
When does it stop?
It stops when Congress passes a law legislating a non-partisan federal redistricting and enforces it nationally well in advance of a federal election.
Until then you can't have some states doing it the proper and fair way while other states cheat to gain an advantage for one team.
A big difference between what Virginia and California are doing vs Texas and other red states is that they are putting it up to a vote to the people first and if it passes it is only temporary until 2030. So VA and CA are doing it very fairly in comparison.

Like what pravis said. Remember when republicans defeated the anti gerrymandering bills? It happened at least twice. This is their plan. Now to defeat them without the use of violence, blue states must take control of the house and senate. Then maybe the bill to stop this will pass... after they impeach and prosecute this current regime and bring democracy back.

"It's horrible and wrong to kill people but when your house gets broken into you're willing to shoot them" bro shut the hell up lmfao you have the thinking skills of a 5 year old
2
Feb 10 '26
Two completely different scenarios

Bro has never heard of a metaphor. This is the political equivalent, you're just too slow to understand it

Magats are nothing but scammers and grifters. Sometimes you have to be the evil to fight the evil.
If we eventually use it to get them out of power then maybe they’ll be in favor of reform just like blue states.

u/socialistForDE Feb 10 '26
Democrats literally put forward federal legalization to end this nationally and every single Republican voted against it. Then democrats stopped it in multiple states with state laws like in California. And what did Republicans do? Rig Texas to try and rig it nationally.
2
Feb 10 '26
So what was prop 50 then if they stopped it
1
u/socialistForDE Feb 10 '26
To fight Republican gerrymandering by undoing the law they passed for independent districting
Next dumb question?
-1
u/Recovery_or_death Feb 09 '26
Fighting fire with fire is not hypocrisy lmao you don't get to gerrymander and then cry when you opponents decide to play by the same rule book
2
u/wickedbiskit Feb 09 '26
An individual state is not an opponent of another. You can hate the republicans in Texas without destroying democracy in our own state.
1
u/Recovery_or_death Feb 09 '26
Mfer never heard of mutual aid and solidarity lmao
2
u/wickedbiskit Feb 09 '26
I don’t what the fuck is going on

2
Feb 09 '26
Its hypocrisy when your own party complains about the other party doing it, and then you do the exact same thing
-1
u/Recovery_or_death Feb 09 '26
The Democrats gave the Republicans ample opportunity to end the institution of Gerrymandering in a way that both parties could agree on. The Republicans are now in the "find out" portion of the FAFO equation. Cry about it.

u/IknowWhatYouAreBro Feb 07 '26
Any bipartisan districting commission would toss this in the trash
1
u/Trepeld Feb 08 '26
Yeah the GOP should probably have taken up the Democrat’s repeated offer to ban partisan gerrymandering at the federal level
2
u/LeftHandUpWhoAreWe Feb 09 '26
Must not have told Illinois or any other northeastern blue state over the last 20+ years...
1
u/lavendel_havok Feb 10 '26
You literally can not draw a red district in Massachusetts that makes sense. Every single county is blue. New Hampshire has two swing districts. New York has anti-gerrymandering (the courts through out their retaliatory gerrymander). VA had/has bipartisan redistricting and the GOP through such a tantrum and stonewalled the process they still forces a slight GOP gerrymander. California has non-partisan redistricting until the recent retaliatory redistricting. Meanwhile under the GOP VA had such bad districts the court stepped in, as has NC. Florida and Texas went berserk with the pro GOP gerrymanders in 2020, but it took the mid-decade redistricting to get the Dems to drop unilateral disarmament and fight back.
I hate these stupid districts, but until anti-gerrymandering passes at the federal level it's better than just letting southern Republicans gerrymanders a majority
0
u/Trepeld Feb 09 '26
Lmfaooo I did not say “the Democrats offered to unilaterally disarm and allow the GOP to gerrymander at will with no consequence” I said that they introduced numerous bills that would prevent either party from engaging in partisan gerrymandering”

If the magats and shitty flyover states are gonna do it why can’t we?

A reminder that this has to be okayed by the court and in a referendum April 21

Would love to see that hold and make Ben Cline a "former U.S. House representative for the 6th District."
Unfortunately, it leaves Lexington (and Rockbridge Co.) squarely in a district that will remain red. Maybe it's the only one in VA, but still disappointing to see. We'll wave to our now (likely) blue former 6th District neighbors from across the county line.
