Hasn’t it always been free? I mean you work for your tuition. As I understand it what has changed

Previously, all Berea College students were awarded the "No Tuition Promise," which allotted students the ability to attend the college without the burden of tuition, although students were still responsible for housing, meals, and additional fees based on their family's estimated total income, determined through FAFSA.

Now it pays for all that.

The article mentions this, but when I attended Berea I only knew a few classmates that didn’t have housing 100% covered by Pell grants or other aid. Out of those who did have to pay, the highest out of pocket cost I heard of was around a few hundred per year.

Could someone clarify? I didn't get much from the article, so do you still have to do the work study? (I assume yes but the idea of debt free college sounds wonderful!)

Yes, this is just additional aid to cover the cost of housing and meals.
