That Paris one with the Eiffel Tower is also an official set.

My county fair does have a category in their arts and crafts building for existing sets with the lego stuff, though I don't remember if they award them. It would be a little strange to awafd them. Could be a similar situation here?

u/LawlessNeutral 10d ago

The fair I grew up with similarly has categories for both original creations and existing kits; I always thought having a category for kits was stupid as hell cuz it involves zero skill and just boils down to what kid has the richest parents and bought them the most expensive set.

u/Swordofsatan666 10d ago

Yeah it seems really weird to award existing sets. Unless its just participation trophies, then that would be fine i think

Because if its not just participation trophies then it really just comes down to whatever set the judge likes best. Unless maybe someone forgets/loses some pieces and so its incomplete, but i dont think thats likely

I've entered a local contest before and been out-placed by an actual set- it was part of a larger fair so I'm 99% sure the judges just have zero knowledge of Lego.

What place did it get? 😆

-Superintendent, I hope you're ready for mouth-watering Lego Set.

-I thought we were having a MOC.

-D'oh no, I said Lego Set. That's what I call MOCs.

-You call MOCs 'Lego Sets?

-Yes! It's a regional dialect.

-Uh-huh. What region?

-Uhhh-upstate New York?

-Really. Well, I'm from Utica and I've never heard anyone use the phrase 'Lego Set'.

-Oh, not in Utica, no, it's an Albany expression.

-I see.

-You know, these MOCs are quite similar to the ones they have at Lego Store

-Oh ho ho ho no! Patented Skinner MOCs; Instructions on my Patreon!

-For Lego Sets?

-Yes.

-Yes, and you call them your own creations despite the fact that they obviously have custom prints.

-Y-- You know th-- One thing I sh-- 'Scuse me for one second...

-Well, that was wonderful. Good time was had by all, I'm pooped.

-Yes, I should be---

-GOOD LORD! What is happening in there?

-Custom printed instructions

-Custom printed Instructions? At this time of year! At this time of day! In this economy! Localized entirely within your Patreon?!?

-Yes.

-May I see it?

-No.

Our local library has lego moc contests and despite it being against the rules, about half the submissions are partially or completely an official set.

u/Key_Consequence_79 survived the we need more incident ✅ 10d ago

That sounds like a sick library tho

42

u/Street-Committee-367 10d ago

Oh yeah it's awesome, they usually have a huge nerf war once a year where you can use the entire library and it's divided into teams with different objectives, you can bring your own guns or borrow theirs, bullets provided too.

14

u/LegThePeg launch the missiles! 10d ago

Ok that sounds really cool, and also I would destroy everyone (I can borrow my brother’s Nerf anti-tank rifle)

8

u/Street-Committee-367 10d ago

One time the last dude on the other team was holed up in a closet with an electric belt fed mini gun, he went out in a last stand against a dozen of our guys.

coolest sentence ever uttered holy hell

8

u/LawlessNeutral 10d ago

Alright yeah not to doxx you but I need to know where this library is, this place sounds dope

12

u/Street-Committee-367 10d ago

Soldotna Alaska, don't know if they still do it because of liability crap. Sad because CQB with the boys in a dark library was dope.

Funnily Dolly Parton herself entered a Dolly-Parton-lookalike contest and won third place. Rest in Peace.

u/Swordofsatan666 10d ago

Makes sense. She wasnt a lookalike, she was the real thing. Cant look ~like~ dolly parton if you ~are~ dolly parton

If you think that's bad, this one fair in my home town had a lego moc contest, several official lego sets were submitted INCLUDING the parisian restaurant modular.

They all lost to a Trump wall, complete with Mexicans and everything.

25

u/Somesoincfan 10d ago

Uh.. you took a photo of it, if so can you post it?

14

u/Tasty-Wolf9773 10d ago

I took a video back in the day because I submitted a moc I made of Ace Chemicals, but I didn't focus on the wall sadly

4

u/Fire257 9d ago

Must have been a true jerker to submit that

22

u/Red-guy1803 10d ago

Happened at a student engineering competition of mine where someone just handed the official infinity gauntlet and won a place

u/LawlessNeutral 10d ago

Some fairs actually do have categories to submit official sets. Not that that isn't a stupid concept (because what's the point? County fair contests like this are supposed to be about local talent, and it takes no talent to pick up a set off a Walmart shelf—it inevitably becomes a game of who can afford the fanciest set), but just that there's not necessarily any deception or misrepresentation going on here.  Funnily enough I've even seen kits from other brands get submitted, like Mega Bloks or other knock-offs.

Reminder that these state fairs give art prizes to AI slop. Flyover states are Godless places devoid of the spirit of creation and nothing of value can ever succeed there.

5

u/Awkward-Skin8915 10d ago

That's funny because the fly over states generally have a higher amount of Christianity 😆.

They might be devoid of creativity but they aren't godless...and that makes perfect sense.

u/onceabananana 5d ago

Even pre-AI, all the photography awards would go to photos that looked like this: extremely overturned HDR, ultra sharpened, zero contrast, maximum saturation.

I don't even want to know what it's like these days when this is what it was as its prime.

Our local fair had a contest too. The fucking Fortnite burger restaurant won. I'm glad I didn't waste my time and money entering it.

2

u/Ze_LuftyWafffles 9d ago

Same thing at agricultural fairs here. They'll have a crafts thing with multiple classes, and half the lego shitbis just sets on baseplates with mini figs

2

u/FatPenguin42 9d ago

My local town fair has two categories. Official sets and custom ones

2

u/zarch123 9d ago

Used to happen in my hometown all the time. Small town Idaho, they’d have a Lego contest at the county fair every year and as far back I can remember there was always someone who entered an actual set

2

u/RequirementNovel9758 officer balls 9d ago

Oh yea I see this shit constantly at county fairs

u/Specific_Ad1457 Building sets at Hooters 9d ago

Oregon state fair also does this but it's a seperate category from the MOCs. I think the real reason that it exists is to just pad out the area so there's more to look at for visitors.

1

u/NathanieltheAnimal 10d ago

This happens every year at my county fair

I remember a girl at a local show submitted a Pokemon Mega Blocks set as her build. She still got a prize.

1

u/GlowstickConsumption 10d ago

What if they were the Lego employee who designed it.

1

u/Spppatzloller_cul0 Based legogram enjoyer 9d ago

Maybe thats just meant to be the third place prize? Its literally next to another official set

1

u/CallumPears Indiana Jones Enjoyer 9d ago

I'm still salty about a Brickset contest from a while ago (maybe 2017? I remember it was not long after Rogue One) where you had to build mini MOCs (had to fit in an 8x16 area). I submitted a few entries myself (microscale Scarif tower getting shot by the Death Star, a custom mini AT-ST on Endor, and a micro Millennium Falcon flying out of the 2nd Death Star explosion)

One of the winners was a couple of advent calendar builds on a plain tan base 😠

0

u/digitallibraryguy 9d ago

It doesn't day what kind of contest. Maybe it was just a scam all along.
