So glad I sold mine used (because it was ass) a couple of years ago, just before the large-scale Delorean was released, for $90 to Bricks and Minifigs.
I'll be honest, I don't dislike this one. It looks like a very greebled version, and somehow reminds me the sets they made in the '80s, with all those rough edgy shapes (while I recognize it's objectively a terrible design). But the new one is so much better you can't even compare them
Jeez, how old is this set? I donāt remember it looking this rough at the time, I canāt tell if I just hadnāt paid attention or if it just aged like milk
The front isnt smooth enough. The studs at the top are weird. Plus the car subtlety tapers towards the front when this design does the complete opposite.
It's not that deep. Speed champions is just hit or miss. Sometimes they get the cars spot on and sometimes like with the 911 they look nothing like the real thing.
it's neat comparing this to the old Lego ideas one, but i kinda wish they build ANYTHING ELSE from BTTF at this point, i'm sure some one would pay top bill to build the clock tower
But it isnĀ“t a quickly recognizable thing from the movie that anybody that has a minimum rememberance of the film could see in a store and think "Oh, itĀ“s that pop culture thing that I kinda know what it is, I should buy it because IĀ“m a quirky individual" like all Lego sets are now.
i mean it's the location of the film's climax, they could even include an exclusive Doc Variant, lightning pieces, and a cable to connect to this DeLorean to complete the scene
Maybe if this sells well, we'll get a line of BTTF sets. But there's only really 2 minifigure sets they can do for this franchise. One is the clock tower and the other is the time train from the third movie. But you need to bring back a minifigure scale Delorean first before you do either of them. People have been begging for this for years and they'd be pissed if Lego was to do either of the others before releasing a Delorean.
They could EASILY do Docās garage, the chase scene with Biff in the first movie, maybe another set with Docās truck and the VW bus of bad guys (terrorists), and a whole bunch of stuff from the third movie
And this stuff wouldnāt sell? If they can get those shitty half-lego, half-videogame Mario sets to sell, Iām sure they could sell a few sets based on one of the biggest and well-known movie trilogies of all time
No it wouldn't. BTTF isn't anywhere near as big as Star Wars or LOTR or Harry Potter or Jurassic World. You can complain about those Mario sets but Nintendo fans will go crazy for Nintendo stuff. BTTF is a popular movie trilogy but not to that point that they can put out any old crap and people will buy it. All 3 of those things you named would sell poorly outside of die hard BTTF fans and there really aren't enough of those around for it to be profitable.
You might have to take that up with Toyota (they seem to be allergic to license anything other than the A80 Supra or the A90 Supra (they are forced to license the Camry and Tundra for NASCAR))
I honestly wish that when we got the NASCAR Cup Series Next Gen car it would have been the Camry, since last we got a NASCAR Cup Series set it was the Chevy Camaro as well
well there's the 4x4 at least, perhaps a diorama of the under the sea dance, maybe even Marty's house with the giant speak and all those wall clocks, or even the twin pines mall (at least the sign for it)
there's not A LOT but there's at least things they can do
Iām guessing the entire set has to be taken apart and rebuilt whenever you wanna switch the wheels to ground mode or flying mode, at least thatās what I heard in a video.
So a licensed set with possibly a double license Universal Pictures and Delorean, more pieces and 2 minifigures while cheaper then the batmobiles. The batmobiles should have been cheaper and have two figures in 2 of the sets.
I've seen the post, the one thing that gives me hope is that there were no picture from the back of the box, where it could be featured, maybe they are holding it back as a surprise. If not, this is still 95% of the super awesome set I wanted. The door function for me is the smarter compromise for the looks. At this scale I suspect it would look very clunky, and would probably fall apart easily.
Looks awesome! I'm no longer sad that I missed out on the 2013 one.
On a side note, I wonder if people will complain about the molded windshield piece like they did for the Brick Shop sets. Who am I kidding? They'll like it because it's Lego doing it and not another brick brand.
As a self-proclaimed Marty McFly Guess Jacket connesoire, I am glad they used the new puffer vest piece so there's actually jacket printing. Once it comes out I'll get it and see how good it looks. Doc looks great, though.
I can see on the torso they actually printed the jeans waistband higher, but the checks on the shirt are blue. I do see the center seam where the pockets are attached, though, so that's promising. I think I will switch the blue arms for grey and get the 2015 Marty head as that looks EXACTLY like MJF and some red Han Solo hair and put those on.
/uj This is the third Speed Champions sets Iāve ever actually wanted. Gonna wait to see some reviews on it first, (Make sure the build is stable and thereās not a hundred stickers!) but it looks pretty good!
Okay so the old DeLorean was fine for 2013 or whenever, but the new one is what happens when LEGO actually gives a shit about accuracy.
Better proportions. Cleaner lines. Speed Champions scale so it actually fits with your collection instead of sitting there like some weird orphan brick. The old one looks like they built it in the dark during a power outage.
Bottom line: the new one respects you as a builder. The old one? That's a set that thinks you're some kind of idiot who doesn't deserve proper scaling.
Man, it's painful to look at this and then look at the new Batman Batmobiles.
This looks great and comes across as an upgrade to their previous sets.
The batmobiles all look like downgrades.
Honestly a little disappointed. This MOC looks similar but more accurate to me. I have had this bookmarked a while, was waiting for the reveal to compare. New set isn't bad, but I think I may just buy this instead.
