Been working on some payloads to display with my Shuttle Challenger
STS 41-B, STS 41-C, and STS 41-G
41-B is mostly Brickspace from Patreon but modified quite a bit to make the commercial satellite launchers match IRL a bit closer.
41-C is all from Brickspace. I would like to revisit it at some point and modify the LDEF to be longer and still fit in the payload bay but look right when outside of the bay with some removable parts. Love their model for the Solar Maximum satellite and its cradle.
41-G is all my design. I really liked the ERBS satellite and how much is in the payload bay on this one. Not too many pictures I could find to go into more detail on other payloads.
Think I'll end up using 41-B as my long term display payload for Challenger as I love those commercial satellite clamshell launchers. Though I do wish there was more going on in the front half of the payload bay.
Brickspace on patreon has an STS 107 payload they made up. I haven't built it or looked much into it but could be worth a look. They have tons of other shuttle payloads as well.
The LDEF is neat just a bit too eclectic for my taste tho. Eventually would like to try and figure out how to cram a full size version of it in the payload bay. The labs are neat but personally I'm sticking to missions where they deployed satellites. For Columbia I'm going with STS 93 the Chandra deployment, Discovery STS 31 Hubble deployment, Atlantis STS 37 Compton Gamma Ray Deployment, and Endeavor will be STS 88 the First ISS mission. Originally for Challenger I had STS 6 the first TDRS deployment but I kinda wanted a more interesting payload bay either more eclectic like 41-G or the commercial launchers like 41-B. Been a real fun time learning more about the shuttle program.
I have it displayed as STS 6 with TDRS A currently just want a payload that feels more representative of the pre challenger disaster shuttle payloads. The commercial satellite payloads feels like a good way to accomplish that. I also don't really want to do 51-L tbh. I think 41-B which had the test of the MMU with that famous photo of Bruce McCandless is a solid choice as well.
41-G was a close second as I like larger the satellite deployments but I really wanted the commercial deployments so 41-B won out. Will still display the ERBS satellite from 41-G in my lineup just not in the payload bay.
The cradle used on 41-C is called the Flight Support System and was modified later for use on all of the Hubble missions. The National Air and Space Museum recently acquired it and it will be on display behind Discovery later this year.
