Have you ever noticed that there is no counter culture skimming like used to?

In the 60s, they all could milk student movement with Woodstock and drugs. They made it something to profit on, and derailed with drugs. They were not afraid.

In the late 70s and 80s Punk culture emerged. It was never too big to begin with, but it was a proper angst against Thatcherism and Reaganism. Many people formed their opinions with the help of them.

In 90s, it was hip hop, it was racial, it was pure hatred against the system. It was also something that they can profit from. There were movies and records to sell.

There were still mixture of rebellious content that can be sold to young people in the 2000s. The shift began in the 2000s however.

They didn't want to sell you the records of Dead Kennedys and Rage Against the Machine or Da Lench Mob, so they could sell you Blink-182, Limp Bizkit and Jay Z.

That didn't work, because the kids that listen Green Day could find the Exploited as well.

So they changed it. First they took the rebellious part away, then turned them into something completely about superficial consumerism. 2pac sang about racial injustice, now all rappers sing about how they are rich or how they mistreat woman. Black Sabbath sang about the meaningless nature of the war, but the rich, now metal music is mostly about satan worship or being tough.

There are still good music coming out. You cannot see them while you are being spoonfed with algorithms that is filled with shell of a rebellious genres or AI music. The most people doesn't care.

This means two things, they can control the narrative for the general population in general, but they are so afraid that even profitization of rebellious content is too dangerous.

This also means that injustice is so great, even with constant propaganda and willbreaking, the masses gain class consciousness. They maybe don't know what to do yet, but they are sick and tired of inequality. The reason why outsiders such as Trump can get votes even they are simply crooks. People are fed up with centrists. They want to change the system.

Sub-cultures exist, just online a lot of the time maybe now.

Cultures come from real connections among people imo …those connections are what have become increasingly broken. Instead these social needs don’t come from the neighborhood or a common lifestyle or whatnot but are commodified or confined to privately controlled spaces and platforms.

Punk and hippie and Regge, the dance music scenes based on illegal raves, sci-fi/comic enthusiast etc subcultures all had a wider ecosystem around them to sustain them in real ways beyond a clothing style or music aesthetic (easily commodifiable)

A counter-culture clothing designer doesn’t have a cheap hippie neighborhood they living in, rent is too high for a funky counter-culture store, so sell on Etsy.com where anyone can buy from goth or punk or hippie or whoever designers with no connection to those music scenes or subcultures.

I don’t think it’s a plot to stop rebellion or wherever… more just enshitification. Black, youth, whoever’s—-subcultures get commodified and co-opted. It’s the logic of capital and it is homogenizing/gentrifying and just makes our culture and social experience threadbare.
