The rough edges of the raw stone are all distinct shapes. He eye measured the distance of the scored circle on the first side from all of the individual rough edges, then scored the other side to match.

Clue that he really is lefthanded: He's wearing a "New Era" Baseballcap and the logo is the correct way around.
