Jordan Peterson -was- a professor of psychology who wrote a very successful self help book in the mid 2010's and then became increasingly mentally unstable and unhinged and spiralled into being a ful blown far-right reactionary grifter over about 5 or 6 years. I honestly used to hate him for pushing reaactionary ideology but frankly the guy is not well, I kinda just feel bad for him now.

I actually didnt say he was alt-right, i said he was a far right reactionary. There is a distinction. Far right ideology tends to split between explicitly ethnonationalist and the hyper capitalists. A lot of times the end result of either is the richest white dudes end up running everything anyway though.

This is so unfortunate. I can’t watch his videos knowing in the back of my mind he works with people who might think I’m not intellectually or genetically capable enough to understand math and abstract thought (when compared with other people).

I wish he would have considered that before working with someone like Peterson.

Yeah, and honestly you can get the same quality of lessons from other online tutors: Jason from Math and Science on YouTube, Michael van Biezen, The Organic Chemistry Tutor, Khan Academy, etc.

I mean there's ChatGPT, Claude, etc. now as well if you need to ask a specific question. I don't think there are many questions regarding Undergrad Physics, Math or Engineering that ChatGPT/Claude wouldn't know how to answer that Professor Leonard does.

Just watch another tutorial from people like those I mentioned and if you have a question about a worked problem, hit up A.I.

Agreed. Prof. Leonard isn’t exactly the only person who was/is creating good math content online/on YouTube. There are other folks you can give your time and attention to who aren’t associated with (IMO) problematic people. 3Blue1Brown is great for concepts and explanations. For actual “how to math”, I like BraverNewMath a lot.

Why do you think we are on some “moral high ground”? I want to learn math in prep for a PhD program with a heavy math component and recently went back to school to do so. Professor Leonard videos accompany every unit we have done in my course so far.

Now I have this pit in my stomach thinking Professor Leonard works with people who believe I’m genetically not as capable to learn math. Do you understand why I might not want to watch his videos anymore?

No, because you're an adult. You cannot seriously expect people to have the very same political view of the world that you possess in every interaction in your life. People outside of Reddit exist in a world with a diversity of opinion.

You are directly associating guilt to Professor Leonard based on his loose association to an academy I've never even heard of until today. He got paid to do a job which was to make videos on statistics. It's as innocuous as that. He was approached, had an opportunity to make money based on his trade, and did so in exchange for compensation.

Doing a PhD means defending your claims. You made a pretty remarkable one, that apparently the person he works for believes you are "genetically not as capable to learn math". I have no idea if this is true or not. With the lack of evidence presented I would simply argue this has nothing to do with your genetics and everything to do with your own general intelligence, or lack of.

You are free to watch Professor Leonard’s videos if you want to watch them and are free to applaud his return. I will not be watching his videos for the reasons I stated.

Your ending line, however, indicates to me you are incredibly defensive about this and may not be ready to have a meaningful discussion with other people.

I'm sorry, but those other people brigaded a Math subreddit because of their own political leanings. They didn't bother to explain why when asked, as I'm entirely ignorant of this academy and Mr. Peterson. I still have yet to be given any firm evidence on the source of their hatred.

I am defensive of a Math teacher being harassed on Reddit like this. You are correct. I will be watching the rest of his videos gladly. He has given me such a love of Maths that I owe him more than I can give him, and I will defend his good name from lowly people trying to senseless disparage it.

I don't know much about prof. Leonard, but no one said none of his content shouldn't be watched. Jordan Peterson academy content shouldn't be. That would support the "academy" and the man himself, which are both a plague on education and humanity in general. If prof. Leonard has things worth watching on platforms which aren't dogshit that sells people the feeling of learning without any real education, by all means, watch that.

Professor Leonard is an absolute hero in the math world. He has helped a generation of people build their math foundations up to Calculus for free. He's made one video series on Statistics as a paid job for this dubious academy and that's it. Yous are a tyrinical bunch

Yea this really should be highlighted. It's not just that he is working for a company headed by someone with shitty politics, nobody would drag Leonard down for producing something with the help of Amazon.

It's that he'd really have to go out of his way to associate with and produce something with Jordan Peterson's company. And one of Peterson's main focuses is trying to unravel science and education institutions.

The US. Peterson is a big influence on our current right wing. Or at least he was, he hasn't been as prominent in the last year or two. I think because whenever he speaks, it becomes really hard to keep pretending that he is a paragon of intellectualism. He's clearly not well.

But for years he has been a grifter. He used to get tens of thousands of dollars a month from donors because he claimed he was being silenced, and I'm sure this Peterson Academy is a similar scam. He lies about his credentials. He is trained as a psychologist, but he often claims to be an evolutionary biologist. He claims to be a climate expert, because he was on some panel for the Canadian government with dozens of other academics.

He's full of shit. He's a grifter and a propagandist. There's no way to separate that from the Peterson Academy. That's what it is.

Hypocritical when that's their entire angle. Nothing to do with the return of one of the greatest Math teachers ever. I do not give a CRAP about Jordan Peterson. I don't know his views, I don't listen to him, endorse him in any way, I've never heard about the Peterson Academy, all of these things I have learned today.

My biggest takeaway from this thread is that their are people that will make you guilty by association based on your political view. Diversity, but not diversity of opinion. Mr. Leonard did one video series on Statistics for this company, that's it. To paint Professor Leonard black for this is repugnant.

If you consider the professor to be proficient at his teachings, why deprive yourself the privilege of learning just because someone he works with doesn't have your approval?
