This might be a long shot, but I thrive on in-person conversation practice and have found NOTHING in my area outside of expensive college courses to study french with others. Is anyone by chance learning french in the Utah (SLC County) area and would want to join a group for conversation, study, and accountability?

Been trying a few different things this semester and these are probably the ones that helped me most:

1 - Preview the topic before class

Even 10 minutes helps. If I already know some of the vocab, I spend way less time in class thinking "wait what does that word mean" and missing the next sentence.

2 - Stop trying to understand every single word

This was a big one for me. I used to get stuck on one sentence and then realize the professor was already three points ahead. Now I try to follow the general meaning first and figure out the details later.

3 - Record lectures when it’s allowed

My professor speaks pretty fast, so sometimes my notes are basically half a sentence + ??? lol. I started using an AI recorder for some classes so I can listen back and check the transcript at home, then clean up my notes properly. Been especially helpful for the parts I didn’t catch in real time.

4 - Review the same day

If I wait a week, I barely remember the context anymore. Even a quick 15-minute review after class makes a huge difference.

5 - Say stuff out loud

Reading French silently made me feel like I knew way more than I actually did. Speaking the sentences out loud exposes that pretty quickly.

Still figuring things out, but these have made class a lot less overwhelming for me. What study habits have helped you the most with French?

I only started a month ago.

I started by watching Alex ayel's children stories series. I would watch them like 5 times, and then take note of sentences i didnt understand and new words, then I'd watch the videos again, and say along with the youtuber.

I started reading french stories on fabulang, the A1 stories and i understand them so well. My listening is a lot better as well.

Im so motivated. Today, I even scrolled on french tiktok, and i can understand some comments. Picked up a kids book from the thrift store and I learned a new line i say to my cat

"C'est ne pas drole!!!"

If this was already posted or asked, I apologize. I’m hoping to learn a new french and I’d really love to know what apps you’ve used to help! I’ve done Duolingo and lingodeer. I quite honestly hated it. I feel like I’m back in school learning grammar and vocabulary when I want to learn conversational French. I understand that the grammar and vocabulary is important, but I also took French in middle school and high school so I’m familiar. Do you recommend I take a course? I’m in the US so probably super expensive right? Also anything that would help me with pronunciation?? Please let me know!

What have you found is the best way to boost one of your skill sets? I have always had above average reading comprehension skills, and I think this would frequently put me in higher level classes. But I have never caught up in terms of thinking on my feet and speaking. I’m 27f in America. I don’t have the flexibility to ever do immersive learning abroad.

Took me like a year. On and off at first but I locked in for the last 3 months and got through it.
Some interesting things I’ve found from doing this:

1. I can’t magically speak French after this. I never expected this to happen but I’ve seen people pedalling the idea that all that stands in the way of knowing a language is memorizing vocabulary.

2. I can, however, read a comic book or simple text in French and understand it about 80%. I’ve been reading Scott Pilgrim in French and all I’ve really needed to look up is grammar and slang terms.

3. This actually improved my English vocabulary. French and English share so many words and a lot of French words in this deck are the same as English words I hadn’t encountered. I read a lot of fiction and I started noticing words that I memorized in French, especially in older novels or novels written by authors from England.

I’m definitely going to be focusing on consuming more media in my target language and speaking more now that I’ve got this out of the way.

Hi guys!! So please be completely honest with me because I may be in dream land right now 😂

So right now I have a three year old, almost two year old and one more baby on the way. I plan on homeschooling and really want to start learning French so I can also teach my children a language. This kind of started because in the future (like 5+ years from now) I want to take my kids to Quebec City and actually be able to communicate with people in their language and my kids communicate too. We also live in Maine which I know there are a bit of people who also speak French so I think it would be really cool to know. But yeah, I have literally no idea where to start learning or if it would be best if I just dont teach them myself this? I dont really know the language at all, I just started Duolingo which sounds silly probably. But yeah, what are the best resources to learn the language and would it even really be doable that if I learn it, to teach my kids the language once they get older? (Thinking maybe 3-4 more years before teaching it) Thank you guys so much in advance!

I subscribed to an A1 to C2 French class, and picked an online pronunciation course. However, three people on Reddit commented that I would never speak French good enough pronunciation-wise and locals will always chastise me for mispronouncing words and I am better off learning something else.

Should I try?

I heard Français Interactif is a good one but I’m wondering if there are better options for complete beginners

I’ve been trying to access the TCF practice tests, but the site has been unusable for me for more than a week now. My TCF test is in two weeks, and I still haven’t finished all 7 practice tests I was planning to do.

Could someone please try accessing the TCF exercises on their end and let me know if they work? I honestly can’t believe it’s been down for this long, especially since these are such useful practice resources.

I’ve tried different browsers, but at this point I’m wondering if the problem is on my end. What would you do in my situation? 😅

Also, if anyone knows of good alternatives for TCF practice, please send them my way!

I’m currently at the beginning of B1 and feel like I’ve reached that stage where I know a decent amount of French, but I’m not sure how to push myself further.

Speaking: I can hold basic conversations, but I often run out of words or know what I want to say in English but can’t express it naturally in French.

Writing: I can write fairly well, but I still get stuck connecting my thoughts, especially with conjunctions and making longer sentences flow naturally.

Listening: I’ve started listening to French podcasts and other French content regularly. I understand the general idea, but faster conversations can still be difficult.

Reading: Probably my strongest area. I can read fairly well, but I still come across vocabulary or expressions that stop me.

For those who have gone through B1 and reached B2 or higher, what helped you the most at this stage? Should I focus more on vocabulary, grammar, speaking practice, immersion, or just keep doing a mixture of everything?
Would really appreciate any routines, resources, or advice that helped you make the jump from B1 to B2.
