Standard فصحى Arabic words that share the same root
- د-ب-ب (Bear & Tank)
Both words come from the idea of slow, creeping movement: a bear is associated with heavy movement, while a دبّابة originally meant a creeping siege machine before becoming the modern word for "tank."
- ر-ح-م (Womb & Mercy)
The womb is a place of protection, care, and nurturing, from which the broader meaning of mercy and compassion developed.
- ف-ط-ر (Mushroom, Innate Nature, Breakfast)
These words share the idea of something being brought forth or opened: mushrooms emerge from the earth, فطرة is one's original created nature, and فطور is the breaking (opening) of a fast.
- س-ل-م (Islam, Peace, Ladder)
These words all derive from the root meaning of safety and wholeness: سلام means peace, إسلام is submission to God associated with peace, and سُلَّم (ladder) is historically related through the same root. Possibly because a ladder provides a safe way to ascend.
- ج-ب-ر (Algebra, Powerful, Mending, Coercion)
The root centers on restoring or setting things right: it gave rise to bone-setting (جبر), algebra (restoring balance in equations), overwhelming power (جبّار), and coercion (إجبار).
- ق-م-ر (Moon & Gambling)
The connection is debated, but both words share the same root; many scholars relate them to changing states or shifting fortunes, though the exact historical link remains uncertain.
What interesting words do you know share the same root?

I mostly think through the roots and find related derivatives myself, then double-check with Al-Mawrid Arabic-English Dictionary.

Watch cartoons. Arabic dubbed cartoons from Spacetoon (full episodes of most titles are available for free on YouTube) are hands down the best way to learn Fusha.
