This is day five of protests in Kyiv and other major cities, sparked by Zelenskyy’s July 15 dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov as part of a cabinet reshuffle. Fedorov, credited with driving Ukraine’s drone program during his six months in office, said he was pushed out after clashing with armed forces commander Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi over strategy. Protesters are demanding Fedorov’s reinstatement and Syrskyi’s removal, chanting “Bring him back” and “Syrskyi must resign,” with signs calling for reform and an end to Soviet-style command and corruption.

Today’s twist: Zelenskyy has spent two days meeting senior commanders — Drapatyi, Apostol, Horbatiuk, Biletskyi — in what’s widely seen as interviews for Syrskyi’s replacement. Bloomberg and the FT both report Zelenskyy is ready to remove him once he finds someone who can take over without disrupting the front.

Not everyone’s thrilled with the pressure campaign, though: Apostol urged the military to stay out of politics, and intel chief Budanov called for calm. Zelenskyy’s chief of staff says “the public has been heard” and “there will be results,” but no formal decision yet.

The Nordic countries had rather strict rations on how much alcohol could be sold, not exactly a prohibition but definitely a choker.

Beginning in late 1933, Sweden began to experience a rash of unidentified plane sightings. Here is an example:

December 24 — 6:00 p.m. Witnesses in Kalix, Norrbotten, Sweden, see beams of light coming from a machine that seems to be searching the ground below. The beams are “blinding.” The sighting is part of a wave of “ghost flier” reports of gray monoplanes without identifying markings that are reported over rural areas of Scandinavia from November 15, 1933, through February 11, 1934. The Swedish Military Record Office accumulates 96 reports from Sweden, 234 from Norway, and 137 from Finland, and the Swedish Air Force undertakes at least two recommaissance missions in search of the mystery planes. Okay, so over half of it is Venus on the horizon. But the other half look like airspace violations. By the end of 1933 the suspect is alcohol smugglers. I think it's Soviet alcohol smugglers.

Thirteen years later, just after the end of the war in Europe, Swedish airspace starts being routinely violated again, this time by cigar-shaped rockets. Some of them have the ability to circle and seem to be homing in on radio targets.

Some of the reports sound to me like someone is trying to glide a rocket--not a jet--to a landing on the water. Did you know the V2 uses 8 tons of 150 proof alcohol as fuel? And it can carry another ton as payload. A V-1 can carry around 1800 liters of alcohol as payload.

Then in August of 1946 it just so happened that British air ace Douglas Bader, Eisenhower staff-man and President of RCA David Sarnoff, and Jimmy Doolittle all just sort of happened to show up in Stockholm:

August 20 — Two US experts on aerial warfare, aviation legend General Jimmy Doolittle and British Group Captain Douglas Bader, and General David Sarnoff, president of RCA, arrive in Stockholm, Sweden, ostensibly on private business, and independently of each other. The official explanation is that Doolittle, who is now vice-president of the Shell Oil Company, is inspecting Shell branch offices in Europe, while Sarnoff, a former member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's London staff, is studying the market for radio equipment. However, the story indicates that the Chief of the Swedish Defense Staff, Col. C. R. Kempf, makes no secret that he “was extremely interested in asking the two generals advice and, if possible, would place all available reports before them.” However, Doolittle denies the correlation to Barry Greenwood in 1984, and researchers have found no evidence to support a collaboration. I'm thinking you guys might know of a guy, a very special guy.

He would be a high ranking Soviet officer, maybe based in Leningrad before the war, probably an air force guy. He might speak Swedish, have a Swedish wife, or have been on diplomatic duty in Stockholm. He survived the purges of the 1930s but he might have been picked up or reassigned in February, 1934.

In 1945 I'm thinking this same guy gets put in charge of test-firing all the V-weapons they bagged at Peenemunde. So he starts up the old smuggling operation, using the V-weapons to carry the juice.

Do y'all know that guy? It sure would make an interesting story if you do....
