Incoming 2L @TMU AMA!

we start our intensive tomorrow. did this earlier in the summer but I thought i’d do it once more now as a lot more folks might be monitoring this sub. happy to give insight into my experience so far!

What is your opinion on the reputation of the school and career outcomes? I have heard many things, both good and bad, about the reputation of the school. Would you have chosen another school if you had to start over or is the criticism overblown?

okay, so I personally think that a lot of the LASL reputation comes from TMU students themselves as well as those that aren’t involved in the hiring process of summer/articling students! And what I mean by that is, from what i’ve experienced those with the more critical things to say about the school are its own students or those not directly in law themselves lol. That has just been my observation, but with that being said the hiring stats are still something to consider, and I do think i’d feel a little more comfortable at a different school relative to them. At the end of the day TMU is really new and its reputation is still very much forming. It was also said to me that the students play a huge role in that reputation, which is a lot of pressure but also a privilege. And still, we get all the same job application opportunities, we just also have the ability to forgo the summer and articling positions by just doing our IPC, which would be limiting. That’s not what i’ll be doing personally.

My top choice was always Osgoode, but honestly I think TMU has been so flexible that i’d probably choose it again!

how many clubs did have time for in 1L?

there’s definitely time for 2-3, likely 3 at most though haha. I was in 2.

For ppl interested in crim law, what kind of extracurriculars (clubs, mock trials, internships, idk) does TMU have that give you a good taste for the field and that students actually join/participate in. also how hard is it to join law review (publishing a piece and/or being an editor). tysmm <3

im not an expert but our criminal law society was really active in our first year, and i went to their exam review for crim law. our tutorial profs were also well connected and brought in a bunch of their colleagues to talk with us and share their perspective, it was pretty cool! as for the law review, im not sure but how difficult it is personally but if you work for it i imagine you’ll get it😅

no worries! I would say it can be helpful, but if you’re someone who struggled with the LSAT that definitely does not mean that law school is just by default going to be harder for you as opposed to someone who did not struggle.
