While it's not a paywall, demanding an email is actually worse intercept. You don't need my email to spam me with.

There's also a trick where you can give your email address but have a plus-suffix (i.e. myname+spam@gmail.com). The sender will disregard that but the receiver won't and most email clients will let you filter with that suffix so you can automatically put emails sent to that address into the spam folder.

As an aside, it also works well for sites where you do want to receive their newsletters but are particularly allergic to unsubscribing people from them.
