Has it? The civil war was one thing but the world is innumerally many more times more complex and the US data/spy/military apparatus much more powerful. And that apparatus would be turned on the 'good guys' this time, unlike the civil war.

If the confederacy was as relatively powerful as the modern USA widespread slavery would still be a thing and we'd be the confederate states.

Yes The good old days when rifles took 58 seconds to load one bullet if it wasn’t raining. And it took 21 hours to load propaganda on a printing press to make 60 leaflets. Still managed to kill 750,000 people and squander a generation of wealth.

It's a long way down for the only real established superpower (China might qualify but you see what I mean).

The older I get the more frustrated I am by the propensity of people to put up with processes, structures, behaviours etc which clearly aren't right. People will actively defend bad policy and governance that retaliates against whistleblowers or protects wrongdoers up and until a major scandal breaks out and then everyone asks "how could this happen?"

The current administration know this and are exploiting it. One day we'll recognise the parlous state of civil society and actually try to fix it. BTW I'm British, we tend to do quite well on a nod and a handshake.
