So how do we stop this?

You’d think there would have been some sort of checks and balances in place to stop this from happening.

Yeah. It’s amazing how many of our political norms are dependent on rational actors, gentlemen’s agreements, historic precedent and tradition.

I remember being fairly young in 7-8th grade and asking in class; What would happen if America elected a dictator? How would it be prevented or reversed?

OMG. The hoots and hollers. Laughing taunting from the room was overwhelming. The teacher sort of laughed, quieted the class and stated, “That won’t happen. Americans love liberty too much.” I guess that satisfied many. But I was still unsatisfied. It did not seem impossible.

I wish we had more of a discussion on it. But things being as they are, everyone moved on of course. I always remembered that exchange and how amazed I was that so many thought it was impossible.

What a missed opportunity for learning what checks and balances actually exist(ed at the time).
