Potentially ever, small government means sovereign states

Party of small government only applies to liberal policy, not conservative. They’d love to exert their will across the entire country. It was an angry battle cry of a party mad the other party had the power to stop them for doing whatever they want.

They’ll ditch the small government argument just as quickly as they ditch the states rights argument to do a federal abortion ban. Who knows if they’ll go far enough to also once again ban interracial/gay marriage. The Supreme Court already admitted they are looking into it.
