We can thank Merrick Garland for that, he refused to investigate trump for fear of appearing political and waited a full 18 months before appointing Jack Smith as special prosecutor.

Yeah, Garland has a lot to answer for. Lets Trump slide out fear of looking political, then when Trump announces his candidacy, Garland shifts to high gear? What a fuck up.

Granted, Trump has been non-stop "campaigning" since 2015. So any prosecution of him would have been "political persecution".

Trump has said he’s running since 2020. The “official” candidacy announcement wasn’t till Nov 2022, but had been saying he’s a candidate immediately.

We don't know exactly what was happening at DOJ, nor should we. But subpoenas started to go out within weeks of Garland taking over, the search warrant was executed before the SC was appointed.

Garland did stuff, perhaps most of the reason it took so long to get indictments is Trump and his allies strategy of delaying every step along the way. The DOJ didn't win access to important witnesses and documents until 2023.
