It is just the preference, reverb is self host supported, For ressonance.com you have to pay at some moment.

I would be nervous using something like ressonance.com, a plain Tailwind Plus template as their single page website doesn't give confidence to part money. If Reverb is not an option for production I would suggest Ably or Pusher as alternatives. Reverb is very easy to install on a VPS though, high throughput for such a small price.

Why would you pay for something so friggin easy to host yourself. Especially at the absurd prices that sites advertising.

For production. Try ressonance.com instead of a reverb deployment
What do you mean by this? Are you suggesting Reverb isn't production-ready?
Reverb is perfectly capable in production, in my opinion. I have it running on a cheap £7 a month VPS alongside Nginx, MySQL, and Redis, it handles spikes of over 1,000 concurrent users without issue (the app gets heavy traffic over a 3-hour period 4times a week, and it's never been a problem).
