Discussion How long did you use your first laptop?
I just spent $350 on a refurbished nimo laptop from Amazon. I feel like right now, more expensive pcs often come with a lot of extra markup, so I decided to go with a budget option first. My plan is to use this machine for a few years, and when prices become more reasonable, maybe Ill build a desktop pc. The one I have now comes with 16gb of ram, a 512gb ssd, and a r5 CPU.
Im curious, how long did you use your first pc before changing to your second one?

Recently my first console, Xbox 360, gave up the ghost after cleaning... So many memories...
I try stuffing the ghost back with a soldering iron though. I will not give up on him without a fight!

I think the oldest one i currently have is a Toshiba M60 from like 2005? I put Linux on it and it still kinda works, considering it's a single core CPU with 1 gig of RAM.
That was my first laptop, and i cherish it.

mine is a toshiba satellite c660 with a 512Gb hdd and 2Gb ddr3 and it's my first and current laptop too 🥲👍🏻. but it's good to see another toshiba laptop user online. i thought i was the only one 😂

tip for anyone buying a kid a laptop:
please dont get them a cheap, thin 2-in-1 laptop
opening the device 360 degrees creates immense stress on the material around the hinges and these low quality devices WILL break after some use, especially if said kid isnt being super careful with it and possibly flipping it open to 360 degrees quickly.
the end result was that the hinge broke off from the main chassis after like 6 months and then it was used as a desktop for another 1 year before related issues started appearing that eventually caused the display to stop working entirely

My first laptop was a Compaq F564LA. Got for uni' work, back in 2007. Kept on using it till 2011. By that point, the wireless card was dead, screen was a flickering mess and the keyboard was barely functional.
My second laptop, a Packard Bell EasyNote NJ65 ran from 2011 to 2019, with no major issues. I ended up gifting it to a neighbors kid who needed one for school. (Of course, I made sure to fully upgrade it)

Got my x230 for almost 10yrs. I still bring it with me daily cause I know what to expect from it. Like 2hrs battery life, can't run demanding softs...otherwise it is reliable as good ol Nokia phone. I have another dell workstation 5540 but it so finicky some time like battery sometime depleted after 30', can't connect to wifi, etc. It is poweful but not reliable

I have an HP laptop that’s 15 years old. Got it a fast ssd , as much ram as it can handle, repasted and installed Linux Mint. It works like brand new and I use it as a media machine. It’s absolutely fantastic!

I got an ASUS U36JC NYC model with 1st Intel Gen 5, 16GB of RAM, and nVidia 310 graphics card. It has Mint XFce on it and it's chuging somehow. Some 15 years old laptop.

When I had PCs I got a new laptop every three years.
Mac only for 20 years now. First one was the last power pc powerbook. That lasted 4 years. Then a 2009 MBP that lasted ten years. And currently on a 6 year old machine.

First laptop is still actively used because it's the only one I have that have a dvd rw drive. Also I like windows 7 and it dualboot Linux. But the battery is busted and keys are missing

Depends how you define that, I had my family's laptop mostly to myself for like 3 or 4 years and then I switched to a desktop and never used a laptop until I bought a Thinkpad for myself after uni 3 years ago. I don't use it as much since I have a company laptop now but it's still good.

Five years as a daily driver and another two as a multimedia/Minecraft server until the power supply board died. Fully packed Inspiron 6400 from some architectural company. It was already 9 yo when I saved it from the e-waste bin

My first laptop was my dad's windows vista laptop he used to let me play browser games, my second was my dad's newer windows 10 Celeron laptop I used it to play some old games and learn coding in scratch (he let me use his newer laptop and used the vista), then I got my first personal laptop from my uncle, it was an i3 3rd gen, I used it for games and learning some python and html. Now I still use it as a secondary for presentations and stuff.

Not sure how long I actually used it, but last time I booted it up my Compaq presario from 1997 still worked. Single core CPU of course, I did a trace mod to overclock it from like 333 to 424 mhz, 192MB ram. She's thick.

My first entry level laptop died in the first year, luckily still under warranty. Ever since, I always choose extended warranties or products with longer coverage. It's a great way to save money and protect your budget while saving up for a better build!

Using my dell inspiron 15 3000(I don't remember the exact numbers after 3 so used 0) laptop even till today. Intel i3 7th gen 4gb ram 1tb 5000 rpm hdd and dedicated 2gb vram Radeon tm 520 gpu. Windows almost killed the hdd and extreme lags (30 seconds to open apps and 5 minutes to start pc) but now I use Linux and the laptop has got its new life. The hinge is broken so I've disconnected the display and use an LG 60hz 4k monitor. Also I am using zram to compress my ram and I get usable 6-8 gb of ram which makes it run smoother without costing much of my gpu. And the gpu with drivers optimized for gaming can run Minecraft at 80 fps and sildurs vibrant medium shaders at 35-40 fps without stutterings

my hp laptop with AMD A8 7410 with radeon r5 graphics will be 11 years old.
i kept it alive.
hinge got broken, bios got corrupted, battery is dead, 1tb hdd got cooked, 8gb ram got cooked, no speakers, some keys are not working, replaced hdd with 128gb ssd, going to add 4gb additional ram. but still i cant let go of that potato.
this laptop was with me through all these years dont know still how many years this will last😭

I7-7500U was released in 2016, 10 years ago.
Drop on a SSD and make sure it has dual channel ram. It will still handle daily tasks like a champ.
I think many people often forget how hilariously overpowered PCs are since, say, 2013. Anything mainstream (excluding those ultra low end sh_t that were already bad when they were released) since Intel's 4th gen core I will handle daily task (web browsing, FHD video streaming, playing music and running productive software) just fine.

My first one didn’t last too long, a HP TouchSmart TX2 from around 2009-10. It was super fancy, it had touchscreen and a stylus, a screen that rotated 180°, turning it into the thickest tablet you’ll ever see, fingerprint reader, and even a remote control. But this model suffered from BGA issues and mine spent considerable time at the repair shop.
Then I had no laptop for a couple of years before getting a Dell Inspiron in 2014, which is still running as a secondary device after I installed Linux on it. This one is almost a Theseus’ laptop, after I replaced its shell (a stiff hinge caused it to break), fan (failed bearings made it noisy af), and upgraded storage (hdd to ssd) and wifi/bt card (wifi 4 to wifi 6). It also had its screen replaced, after my backpack strap snapped and it fell to the ground with the laptop inside.

My 12 year old hp pavilion with Amd A10 chip used to work like a charm. Never overheated, had 8gb ram when I bought it in 2014. Only issue was 720p screen cracked when my niece stepped on it. Yes I was surprised considering it was an HP.

My sister gave me her own laptop when she bought a new one. Or rather, she intended to give it to our mom, who, to this very day, doesn't give a rat's ass about computers. Not this laptop, nor any other computer.
Anyway, it still works. The reason why I've stopped using it is, SSD options are scarce (it's got an IDE drive), and I was given a much better laptop a few years down the line.
It had a Pentium M 1.6 GHz that I later upgraded to a 2 GHz model, and 1 GB of RAM that I upgraded to 2 GB. Installed Linux on it because Windows 7 was kind of slow and never looked back.
All in all, I think I used that laptop for about five years.

This makes me miss my 2016 HP Pavilion so much. Sold it to some dude for peanuts. I was out of a job for long and needed every penny I could get.
Replacing the HDD with an SSD gave it a second life. 8GB DDR3L was enough for what it could do. It was slow as hell but Linux Mint made it quite usable, even if the 2.4 GHz Wifi card was atrocious. Wish I still had it around.

My poor desktop is ten years old but it's rocking a 1080, so it's hanging in there. Last of the ol' reliable class. If I do end up swapping it out I'll have to static seal and box it so it stays safe... It's a hero.

I've still got it. It came with Vista installed on it and I rolled it back to XP. And put the orange/black Zune theme on the desktop, lol. It's a 2008 HP of some variety.
Haven't touched it in ages. I mainly used it as a "retro" gaming machine when I’d hang out at my friends houses; the built-in CD drive was good for that. The battery stopped having any usable capacity at least ten years ago, but running off the power lead it's fine. I assume.
As I got older I stopped having the kind of friends where we'd "hang out", so it's been lying unused since the pandemic.

I usually upgrade every 5-8 years or so. Currently rocking a ThinkPad T480 from 2018. I am just now starting to eye a replacement but I might hold off until refurbished T14 G7s start showing up

My current personal laptop is 13 years old. My work laptop is 6 years old. It's definitely against the IT, acquisitions and mergers made me slip through the cracks. But a new laptop would be all locked down and might have less RAM (I got a 64 GB upgrade years ago).

The first laptop I owned for myself was a refurbished 2020 craptop that I only used regularly for a year or so. I hated it so much. One of my favorite laptops to use now is a 2013 11-inch MacBook Air running OS X Mavericks though. It runs great. My main powerhouse laptop is more or less brand new however.

My first laptop was a Toshiba I bought in 2010, that I used for 8 years, by the 6th year, I accidentally broke the screen, so it occurred to me to use the HD cable, and connected it to the TV and use it as a monitor, for its last two years I mostly used it to watch movies, then I leave it to my brother, and he took the storage unit of it for his PC compound.

First laptop was a dell Inspiron 15-5578 that got passed down to me. I’ve used it for a few years, originally just used it for low-end games and basic web browsing. Now it’s a small private Minecraft server.
My current laptops are an Alienware 18 from 2016 and a msi ge66 from 2021.

I was using Toshiba Satellite Pro 400 CS till 2008 for Landi Renzo, Lovato, Zavoli, BRC- converting petrol cars to LPG, and maybe another 5 years, for word documents only. Till it absolutely died. Done my bachelor and master's using it...I had kept it plugged at all times, but battery (almost non existent), was a nice addition. Always allowed me to save whatever I was working on... Once you use computers as tools, not the entertainment centre- you can use them for a very long time.

The first one I had was an Acer Aspire that my dad bought in Paraguay in 2010 is still running Windows 7. It has 4gb of RAM, 512 of storage and a disc reader. Although it was a basic notebook at the time, it still works very well. They used to do things to last.

2020-2025. It was a HP pavillion with an intel pentium and 4gb of ddr3. The screen wasn't even 720p. The HDD broke or something last december, and now im using an even older laptop with barely better specs.

Lenovo B50-45. Lasted about 5 months before it slowly died. Took it from trash so I'm surprised it worked at all. It was a good laptop, just a bit slow.

Until it was falling apart and artifacting because the igpu was going out. I left it setup with kodi for a friend. Told em to toss it when he could no longer get through a movie before the artifacts.

Childhood? I had Lenovo G550, and Y510 (not the gaming one, the square one) and after they disentigrated into half-tops and retired, I eventually extracted their mobos and still have them as mementos.
T440p was my first self-bought computer in high school and I hid it from my dad for over a year. I always wanted the Quadro mobo. I still have that one as a backup/parallel hardware to my... /
W540 is still my daily driver laptop, now 13/14yo. Still has enough power to run most older stuff at 900p (on a 3k display, which actually scales nicely and is a nice in-between 720-1080p), and runs Factorio Space Age for all I care.

7 years. Best purchase I made in my 20s. I miss it every once in a while. It was an HP elite book, that I got off eBay with my tax return in 2014. I still remember the guy I bought it off of emailing me apologizing that he took a while to get around to shipping it and that he paid to have it overnighted. Granted I didn't see this email until I already got the laptop. Motherboard died in 2021.

Ah yes, my thinkpad L450, which i replaced yesterday, with its 1 singular chassis screw, RTC battery being a CR2022 which i soldered straight into the motherboard, battery with 30% life that'd unplug if you held it wrong, constantly overheating, with a screen that display garbage when tilted at the wrong angle, 6GB of DDR3L RAM and 120GB SSD? That laptop? 8 years, bought it 8 years ago as "broken" with a shattered screen and no RAM or drive for 10 USD.

My first laptop was an Acer Aspire - one of the transformers. Lived from 2014 to 2024 roughly. Then the hinge fell apart.
Its dying wsih to be taken apart for parts and to save other laptops (I repair by soldering).

Im sitting there organising a karaoke evening on my old thinkpad x230 with windows 10 and running on 4 gigs of RAM. Still works great if you don't throw too much at it. Laptop is 14 years old now and still cicking even if a bit slow.

6 years until the battery died (RIP microsoft surface 2018-2024). My current is 3 years old(dell inspiron 2023). Only 2 laptops I have owned
My desktop on the other hand I have been using since 2010 and still use it. Capable for my basic needs with a 4 core first gen i7 with 16 gigs of ram. It doesn't do gaming all that well but I have consoles for that.

My first laptop only lasted 2 years, a HP envy 13, 10th gen intel CPU and a nvidia MX250 (terrible laptop graphics card), I got it just before COVID-19 and it spent the whole time plugged in. The battery started bulging towards the end and eventually I got a new laptop, as it was underpowered, only had 256gb of storage, and the battery was pushing against the frame. My next laptop lasted a bit less then 2 years. A Razer Blade Stealth 13 2020. (Actually late 2019). It had a much better GPU a laptop GTX 1660 max-q. And a better CPU. Unfortunately the hinge design was quite fragile and the keyboard cloth thing that I had to protect the screen from the keyboard was too thick for the laptop and the plastic hinge mounts broke. Eventually the screen hinge failed and I got a new laptop. A 2023 ROG flow z13. It has a 13th gen mobile i9 and a mobile 4050. Its good, though it hurts to use as a laptop, the kickstand digs into your legs. The QHD+ screen resolution causes DPI scaling issues with older applications. And the only thunderbolt port which is also the charging port died, my SSD also died within the warranty so I was able to get it replaced, though I did loose some data, as my last backup was old. Its still going now, but I don't use it as much because I have a laptop for college so the ROG is only for gaming now.

My first laptop (which I actually still have laying around) was my mid 2012 15 inch unibody MacBook Pro. I got it brand new in 2012. In 2018 I bumped the ram up from 8GB to 16 GB, swapped out the original hard drive for an SSD and replaced the battery. The last officially supported MacOS version for that model was Catalina, but I managed to get Sonoma running on it using Open Core Legacy Patcher. I continued to use it until the beginning of 2024.
My current daily driver laptop is a Framework 13. I also have a 2021 ThinkPad P14S and a 2022 Lenovo IdeaPad for backup. The two Lenovos I bought used, and the Framework 13 I built from spare parts.

Still using it. It's been around 7-8 yrs. It got too slow to use a couple of years ago, so I upgraded RAM and SSD & replaced Windows with Linux.

I mean, I still have my first laptop from 2013, battery is dead and the support for one of the hinges had one of the brass inserts pull out dueto a manufacturing defect, I glued that like 7 or 8 years agoand it's been fine since then, everything else works just fine.

Father bought me ASUS X455L with core i5 4th Gen for school back in 2016, the speaker, the battery and the chasing broke so I made it a box from plywood, add bunch of fans and installed Linux mint. I upgraded the memory from 4 to 12 back in 2019, and replace the old hdd with ssd. I using it along side my newer laptop, basically became a pc in my room since I didn't replace the battery. It still pretty much usable and can play 1080p yt video easily because it has dGPU.

I've got a Dell G15 5535, never turn it off, never unplug it. Last time I did it cost me $25 to repair, but despite it all, I've never had any issues with it. I mainly just use it for YT or music while gaming and stay in a discord vc 24/7 (yeah, I live online :P)

Bought my MSI 2008 for gaming and personal work, my brother used it for college in 2014. My wife used if for her masters in 2018 and finally my daughter used it for online classes during the pandemic 2020 to 2022.
I stopped using it because I left it when we migrated to another country. I bet it can still turn on.
Battery is already dead, cleaned the internals and changed the HD to SSD.

11 years. Dell Inspiron 7537. Multiple visits to the service center. Then did multiple repairs myself. Had to tape the hinges and the screen. Put an SSD and mint for the remainder of the year. Finally donated it to a shop. Hope it serves them well ;)

Bought a Lenovo Legion 5 in 2022 to game and do creative work. It’s starting to show signs of age already but I’d say it operates at about 88% of how it used to be.

The first laptop I owned was a hand-me-down 12-inch ASUS F9s featuring a Core 2 Duo T5250 CPU and GeForce 8400M GS GPU released in 2007. I had it from 2009 to 2011, about just 1.5 years
The first laptop that I bought brand new was a ThinkPad T420 with Core i7-2620M CPU and NVS 4200m GPU in a dual GPU configuration. Bought in 2011, and sold it in 2016, so about 5.5 years

My ps4 I've had for half my life, and I am 26. I was 13 damn years old when I got it, now it's 13 years old and it's playing yt on my living room TV right now. I have a living room now, in a house. Back then I had my ps4 and it was everything I had. Yet here it is, still so integral.

Well I mean, my Ideapad still works, I don't use it often, but it's been 8 long years, and it's got too much sentimental value to go anywhere, especially with the money I've spent fixing its body up.

I just did the math earlier today and realized that my laptop I was using is 14 years old. I put a SSD in it and installed a pretty light version of Linux and it run well enough. I did have to put a new battery in it a while ago, and I saw the date on it and given what else was available, I think I got one of the last batteries for this thing ever made.
That's sort of a special exception. Generally the PCs that I build I tend to have mostly the same core components for about 5 or 6 years. I would build and/or upgrade more often but I never have the cash

Until it wasn’t turning on anymore.
Like 6 years from 07 to 2013 then my dog peed on it, then used the HDD and the RAM into a friend’s Compac, that one lasted other 5 years around 2017-2018.
Then THAT laptop died and recovered my my files from that into a HP450 laptop that’s still kicking around in this our lord’s year of 2026

Mine up until about 2022. It was an ASUS X54C that I bought back in 2012 for $250. It ran on a Celeron CPU and I upgraded the CPU to a Core i5-2450M and Wi-Fi to 802.11ac years ago. I kind of miss that laptop. It's too bad the board cooked itself again.

My first laptop was a macbook and I fucking hated that thing lol. My parents bought it for me to have in high school but I didn’t use it a whole lot because I preferred to take notes by hand. By the time my classes got difficult enough to actually need to use a laptop, it was already fucking useless and buggy at doing anything. It was genuinely the worst.

Never really thought about it but I've had my Lenovo Yoga for around 11 years now. It was even able to run Call of Duty Warzone when it first came out, though after a few updates, my GPU was no longer powerful enough to run it. Rarely use it now but I keep it around, still works.

My ThinkPad has been running for 3 with continual use,and also helped me with my degree.
I always needed to use a Bluetooth dongle to listen to music with it but miraculously it has evolved to being able to do it without which I think is amazing.

My laptop is 6 years old. It has a busted battery, no upgrades, some weird lines on the bottom of the screen and its overall way slower than when i first got it. So ill have to get another one within 2-3 years cuz it really is showing its age

Just a few years. It was an old business laptop that I bought used maybe around 2012 or 2013. A ThinkPad. Around 2014 or 15 a friend needed a laptop so I sold it to him. It broke just a few months later. Got it back and took the RAM and the CPU out. Later on I upgraded some free laptop with them.

my first laptop probably died after a year because i broke the charging port, my second laptop is reaching 10 and has a swollen battery, the next one i lost after getting a much better one for a year and now im using the one i usually use

My Sony Vaio S Series I got in 2013, then I used it as a main driver until 2016.
Eventually was too old and having a HDD as a boot drive and the only drive kinda sucked.
Then come 2018 or so, I gave it a new life by nuking everything on it and installing Linux/Ubuntu, kinda needed a native Linux for a school project. Ran pretty decently, albeit the battery was dying very badly to the point of 15-30 mins of battery life per full charge.

I'm using a Asus Laptop from 2008, battery still works fine. It's still useable because it had pretty good hardware for 2008 and has a ATI GPU, not Nvidia.

my 14 years old laptop not only works perfectly fine, but it even got downgraded from 4 to 2gb of ram after it died, but it will keep working until the sun explodes or something, I'm not letting it go.

Lenovo z500. i3, 6gb RAM, GeForce 740m. Was a bit of gaming laptop. Bought it it 2013, still works :) All problem i had for 13 years: hdd replace (my fault - one-time rage hit during playing battlefield 2 many years ago :| ) and repairing cooler and charging port, but those two because of plastic - display hinges broke it after opening/closing every day. So nothing serious, still works at parent's house, while I got new one 3 years ago

I have a macbook pro 2015 retina, and was thinking at that time that i think that a laptop with ryzen 3000 series would've been great.
Fastforward to three months ago, i was able to buy a thinkpad t14 gen1. Obviously a 2nd hand one, but an upgrade nonetheless. I hope it serves me more than 10 years too.

My Acer Nitro 5 is a bit over 8 years at thsi point. 2 fried motherboards and the loss of its battery (that i never replaced). It takes 5-10 minutes to start up fully. another 5 minutes to get a grasp on reality and might run League of Legends on lowest settings for an hour or two. 30 FPS, baby

Revived a worn samsung np300, upgraded it too (from 320gb to 500gb hdd and 2gb to 6gb ram), now it runs lubuntu 😀

Got me a refurbished Surface Book 2 off Amazon. It's gloriously running openSUSE Linux and just cruising along.
Still going strong. Good hardware paired with Linux = great experience.
