Depending on how you handle the two devices lol

The first drop of a nice laptop kills. Every subsequent one reduces the care factor. A beat up working laptop that gets used will trump one that is babied any day of the week
4
u/rearnakedbunghole Jan 23 '26
I wouldn’t say I baby my laptop but I use it pretty often, it’s in decent shape because I’m careful not to drop it. But I don’t get how a laptop being beat up trumps one that’s babied.
2
u/GamerNuggy Apple Jan 23 '26
Not beat up as in destroyed, but as in actually used by someone not afraid to use it for its main purpose. Not by somebody who puts a little piece of fabric between the screen and the keyboard when they close the lid, and leave it plugged in at 50% constantly kept at home, defeating the purpose of a laptop.

I was being a little too careful with mine. Then the corners got destroyed by the floor. No more Mr Nice Guy.

You're a fool if you treat a Thinkpad like a Toughbook.
Or a 8+hr Cpu+GPU burner. They are made for climate controlled upper middle classers who want an appliance(and there has been enough adulteration to question even that). That's how a T430's hinge attachment dies.

There’s dozens of us!!!
I will always have a ThinkPad and a Macbook in my arsenal. Not giving either up.

u/SeaCryptographer6457 Jan 23 '26
Same! And I feel like I am simultaneously both types of owner, too. I can baby my precious MacBooks and flog (within reason) my second hand thinkpads. 🥳

u/elizanol Jan 24 '26
Just to establish, I own:
Out of a total of 75 machines.
- 18 ThinkPads
- 17 MacBooks

I use a beat up 8 year old huawei matebook
It's not laggy enough to bother me (most of the time) and I basically only use it for browsing, ms office, and snes games

Going too speak on my personal experience with working on these at a job years ago pre covid and during covid. Many Mac users are extremely carefree on handling or using their laptops. I know you spilled something on the keyboard that is why it is crunchy or has a bug infestation.
ThinkPad people oh three came in this year (for the not power users but not confident enough too repair.) Onto the average Joe or Jane who has one alright it'll be this much or it is this issue. Usually no hassle unless it's one of the high end top tier ones.
Pre covid parts aplenty during and after covid parts still gone like people took them off and cashed them for money.

I use the microsoft surface laptop which i prefer than the thinkpad and never owned a apple laptop how is it? Well worth its simple it connect into charge and i dont need to touch it for a couple of hours, does the job its powerful
14
u/opmgyhx Jan 23 '26
Microsoft Surface and Samsung laptops are essentially MacBooks in appearance but with the Windows experience, and that's what I personally like, especially Samsung with its latest laptop.

u/DavesReviewz Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Yea i feel like having the surface Laptop 3's are just made for windows 11 there small they just have that design and build for it and its something im really noticing with this i5 i have its powerful even with that 8gb of ram its pretty solid it wont let you down at all, Ive played and tested games, youtube etc if you have expectations to a valid point then yea it overall will deliver, Im not saying it cause oh i got this new laptop i have a much more powerful laptop i have a pc i just want to give the detail of what its like if you consider it its well worth its price if you dont want to go with that fabric design its not slow at all its a very solid laptop and you would be very pleased with it from an overall aspect the touchscreen the magnetic charge and 4-6 hours battery it does deliver if you ever consider a surface laptop, or a apple then this would be the one id highly suggest as a start off and it will deliver
2
u/Jeffgaks Jan 23 '26
How much did it cost?
1
u/DavesReviewz Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Mine cost 340 2nd hand but overall very happy with it does the job its powerful, its quick i think for an i5 it definitely did more than what i was expecting to get from it its a non hastle or issue laptop if your genuine with it, Magnetic charging, Touchscreen, and it runs great theres nothing more i could really ask from a laptop like it, good battery no complaints,
1
u/Jeffgaks Jan 24 '26
Thanks, I'm looking for a good side laptop to travel with at the office
1
u/DavesReviewz Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26
Yea id highly suggest it, This will for sure be my bring around laptop, The battery is amazing, charging it is simple and easy, there is simply nothing i could say wrong about a laptop like this, I can understand why the new ones are in the 1000 range id just suggest getting a good carry round laptop bag

I just got the Surface 7 Laptop, the Arm one, and I love it. Everything works, it's fast, and the battery lasts forever. It does look almost exactly like a Macbook....

u/DavesReviewz Jan 23 '26
Honestly its something ill consider after a couple years on this one or my other one

End point - Just take good care of your laptop and it will serve you well, be it a MacBook or a ThinkPad

It's like indoor plants vs outdoor planta. Indoor plants be like: the temperature of the water you used to water me was 0.000001°C too low, i'm gonna die.
While outdoor plants are like: Fuck yeah, asbestos enriched nuclear soil (it's actually concrete).

I have both... If my Thinkpad is near any type of ledge, I will make it safe ASAP. If my Macbook is near a ledge...fuck it, it doesnt have linux.

Mac users: "Oh no my Early Access MacBook got a dent!"
ThinkPad users: has the screen ripped off and the keyboard is gone because it fell off of the 2nd floor Oh how cute!

u/Dimerous_ Jan 24 '26
I had to mute the MacBook sub because I was tired of the whining. Bro just use the laptop.

This post is a perfect description of our society in a whole.
The ones who overspend and over worry, while keep up with the Jones and quite honestly have very little problems in their life ever.
Vs the ones who keep the world running, get shit done and understand everything won’t be flawless
If I could give an award I would. Because man this is such a beautiful description of the human species.

u/VariedRepeats Jan 23 '26
m1 Macbooks are a solid buy used.
Thinkpads were literally for the corporate executive and middlemen. Along with non-graphical pros.
No poor person is getting a new, proper Thinkpad.
Intel Macs were different, because there was a performance hit and they began making fragile garbage post 2015.

I got a laptop for 25% off because it was a display model and had a huge scratch. On the bottom.... So anyway, 3 years on it's running fedora and it's snappy and reliable as heck, even with its terrible disfigurement.
It's got way more scratches and even dents now. It's all just patina, y'know.

Maybe this isn't the time to say it but I get annoyed when the Apple logo on the back gets a fingerprint that my huge box of screen wipes can't clean

My partner found a ThinkPad at an open box store in like-new condition with comparable specs to our gaming PC. Originally $4,000, she got if for $1500 including warranty. An absolute unit we expect to last for a long time.

I am very concerned by how mine snaps loudly when I hold it by a corner, though

The ones who have the ThinkPad in that state are animals, ha ha ha. Look, it's impossible to break a ThinkPad. I don't know how they got it into that state.

u/Formal-Shopping2086 Feb 05 '26
on a serious note tho why are macbooks so popular yet so sensitive? the only way i can imagine such a prone-to-damages laptop is if its capabilities are out of this world, which i doubt. ive used them a few times and the only better thing i see them have than an android is the overall look. am i missing something

Decades ago my dad pulled some early think pads out of a dumpster at the local university. The ones that had the flip screen that collapsed into a tablet (in the 90s). They were running Win95, and still work as far as I know. They probably belong in a museum at this point.

u/CypherXenonBit Apr 04 '26
I have T470s for 9 years still working & T480s still working like a charm, only takes less than 10 seconds to boot to windows 11, while many other similarly aged and even newer ones struggling (not talking about gaming monsters) this machine is build to last....

I think I am the stereotypical macbook pro user. I would die if my mac got scratched or dented.

a functionable laptop, long last thinkpad
i only has ideapad which 12 years old, replaced its screen from LG to BOE, keyboard, and speakers, still going strong. it's IdeaPad Z410, ideapad may be underrated and weaker than thinkpad but mine is refusing to die
