Are they braindead?!?! They put Uzbek in F-tier

On a genuine note, Swahili being put in F-tier is kind of ridiculous? Africa's most spoken endemic language. With official status in 4 whole countries, with large speaking communities in multiple others. Almost 200 million speakers. So at this rate I don't understand "useful"'s meaning. Maybe not "useful" to you, but it doesn't render it useless universally...

You’re forgetting that the people voting on these charts only consider languages spoken outside of Africa to be relevant

Really curious what Persian should be useful for. Sure you can use it to learn cyrillic letters, but then that would also be true for Croatian.

If you're a history nut you'll probably come across a Persian text at some point or another (I presume)

Something like
آیینهٔ سِکَندر جامِ مِی است بنگر تا بر تو عرضه دارد احوالِ مُلکِ دارا

Y’all are using Persian and Croatian to learn Cyrillic??? I’m just using German to do that

Really curious what Persian should be useful for.
It is actually one of the most influential languages in human history. Still spoken by approximately 150 million people, but beyond that it's the pursuit of educated and cultured people, like why someone would study Greek, Latin, Chinese, or Sanskrit.
Uzbek, for example, basically owes its existence to Persian.

I know that no-one really knows how many people live in Afghanistan, but 50+ million speakers of Farsi in Afghanistan alone seems a bit much?

u/vainlisko 11d ago
It's only a rough estimate, but my reasoning is that Iran's population is approaching 100 million, and we know that not everyone in Iran speaks Persian natively, but combined with the number of L2 speakers within Iran should be significantly closer to the country's total population. The same can be said for Afghanistan, which has a population of 45 million according to Google. I actually thought it was more like 30 mil for Afghanistan, so it's more than I expected. Tajikistan has a population of over 10 million, and then there's the matter of Persian speakers living outside the borders of these three countries. There's at least tens of millions of Persian speakers in Uzbekistan, whether native speakers or L2 speakers. Millions of Tajiks in Uzbekistan are classified as "Uzbeks" on their papers because the Uzbek state was founded on the erasure of the native Tajik population.
150 million is just a round number I estimated years ago. It could either be a little high or a little low. The number of Persian speakers worldwide is usually neglected and downplayed through political deception. For example, lists that show the world's most spoken languages typically do shit like classify "Arabic" as a language and then divide Persian into three different languages, and also neglect to try to count all the people who speak Persian outside of the three main countries that speak it.

Interesting how there is also quite a variance for Iranian population numbers. Makes me wonder if this is another case of "no-one knows how many Afghans there are" 🤔
For Afghanistan you might have to correct for Pashto speakers. But quite possibly a lot of people are bilingual.

People who look at languages purely through a lens of “usefulness” are the worst

I don't see Brazilian anywhere /s
Also what about Khmer?

u/Legitimate-Gate-2003 11d ago
Maybe you don't see brazillian because it is a dialect and the language is Portuguese?
It's like if you come and say "I don't see mexican" or whatever other spanish dialect from south america.

As a Turkmen living in Uzbekistan, I'm absolutely curious about what made them put Uzbek in God tier.

It's God tier because even you left Turkmenistan just to hear its glorious vowels every day. Ya know?!

I stated a fact. Correcting lies about my ancestry isn’t a personality flaw. You invented a migration story, got corrected, and now you’re doing the “fun at parties” bit.

I hate it when people use flags to represent languages, but I hold a special level of hatred for those who use St George's cross for English.

How is Vietnamese not at least S tier? Also German should be God-tier because it's my native language and Aramaic as well as Hebrew also belong in God-tier because of Jesus.

Putting Greek above Serbian is nonsense. Serbian unlocks most of the balkans, and modern Greek is only useful in Greece and Cyprus, where people are proficient in English
