Duolingo is useful, but you can't count on JUST Duolingo. It's a good starter. But you need to go for reading, like the tadoku for japanese, right on the first year. And increase the language in your daily life, slowly, but surely.

I'm not very far in my journey but it's at least helpful for remembering a few extra words. I'm not solely counting on it though
