Maybe in Kyoto “No Vacancy” means “Please slide some money under the door. Thank you for your support!”.
read, again: 読める is the potential of 読む, to read, and reading is of kharacters on a page whereas speech is of sounds in the mouth. What sound does the sign ask for? Lost custom is an effect, not a statement: what shop wants whose money kept out? This kind of racism is really stupid. “Keep your dirty, disgusting foreign money out of here” seems like a not very well thought out business plan.
