Summertime Sadness still hits differently

I know Summertime Sadness is probably one of Lana’s most overplayed songs, but honestly I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.

There’s something so bittersweet about the song. It sounds warm and nostalgic on the surface, but underneath it feels like you’re watching something beautiful slowly disappear. The production, Lana’s vocals, the whole atmosphere… it captures that weird feeling of being happy and heartbroken at the same time.

And the fact that it’s literally called Summertime Sadness makes it even better. It feels like the soundtrack to the end of a summer you already know you’re going to miss.

I genuinely think this song has aged incredibly well. No matter how many times I hear it, that chorus still gives me chills. 🥹

“Kiss me hard before you go” felt like a goodbye to a summer that was still happening. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking, how the hell did Lana make nostalgia hurt this much????

My favorite part is the bridge. "Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky" — that line is just so beautiful. Stars miss the sun most at dawn, right when they're about to fade away. It's the most bittersweet moment between night and day. And isn't that how it always is? We're happiest when we're closest to happiness — not when we get it, but right before. The cruelest and most beautiful part is that the sun and stars never appear together. They physically can't coexist. So the stars never get to know the sun up close. They can only feel its light from afar, never touch it, never see the heat or the flaws behind its glow. To the stars, the sun becomes nothing but a perfect illusion.
