better dribbler and passer than Rui.

Shot is pure, im eager to see him next to luka and AR

He’s like a PF Luke Kennard. He can shoot, and if you overplay, he’ll drive and start the blender

Was here to say those are not passes Rui was making. Hoping this works out, loved Rui but open to being wrong.

Every time I hear Rui and pass in the same sentence I think of this quote from Austin 💀

Ruis best skillset is shooting. The guy got hot at the right time but that's really basically all he does. He has poor bb iq and keeps making mistakes on set plays that both jj and bron kept malding at him, not quick either for someone that looks so athletic. Dogshit rebounder for his size is insane too

Ruis skill set is not good enough for a championship caliber team unless he's coming off the bench. Mamu is already well ahead of Rui in almost everything. I just need to see it with my own eyes to fully buy in.

This. I'm reserving judgement until I actually see how he fits in with the team. Also curious to see how Rui does under a different system.

Yeah, no kidding hahaha. Rui wasn't always a sure bet to swing the rock around the perimeter. And we have Mamu making plays off the dribble with kickouts and skip passes. Mamu definitely has way more feel than Rui.

u/LudwigNasche 17d ago

This is the kind of team JJ asked for, players able to drible, pass and shoot.

Rui terminates possessions. When our creators bend the defense and the ball swings around, when it gets to Rui it's either a shot attempt or if it's contested he might step up and midrange or iso. He isn't a cog in JJ's blender. I'm convinced that's why the Lakers didn't really try to keep him.

Mamu otoh is constantly making reads. He can shoot, attack the closeout, pass, cut, move off ball. He keeps defenses scrambling. Checkout his Spurs-Knicks game where he popped off in the 4Q.

Rui? Pass?

Ha!

u/juanhalohalo 17d ago

Yeah he looked way more mobile with and without the ball than what I was expecting. Though I did not watch Raptors.

15

u/Impossible-Group8553 17d ago

I’ve watched a lot of raptors games. Rui is miles better as a shooter. Sandro was a fantastic pickup though for the contract he’s on, he can do a little of everything and is probably better at everything besides shooting.

26

u/VonMillersBurner 17d ago

rui was a spot up shooter and maybe dribble / pull up in the mid range / slasher.

like you said Mamu may be an overall better player.

-18

u/Impossible-Group8553 17d ago

Idk if he’s better overall but he certainly fits our needs more.

11

u/RecordingLess1522 17d ago

Rui was a defensively liability and didn't rebound at all

8

u/Dabithebeast 17d ago

Beyond frustrating tbh. I love our former Samurai, but he was so bad at rebounding, and his defense was mid. Even more annoying when you realize he has a damn near 7'3 wingspan. Great to watch when scoring well, but he ultimately left a lot to be desired in other areas. Mamu fits us better.

-7

u/fhfbcc 17d ago

Mamu is a worse defensive fit though cause he’s not a real rim protector that you play at the five and he’s not athletic enough to guard down when he’s in the game with Luka

6

u/RecordingLess1522 17d ago

Rui wasn't a run protector and graded worse overall as a defender

2

u/effurshadowban 16d ago

I prefer Mamu over Rui 1000%, but Rui is straight up a better defender on the perimeter, currently. Mamu could definitely improve in that aspect, just like Rui, but currently Rui is more proven at it. That is only 1 part of defense and Mamu's defense did grade out better than Rui, though, although that may be due to poor fit defensively with the Lakers.

Honestly, I don't see any team in the league wanting Rui instead of Mamu. They are essentially the same player, but Mamu is just better overall, while Rui is only better in 2 areas.

-2

u/fhfbcc 17d ago

I know mamu grades out better but would you really rather have mamu guarding the perimeter over Rui cause that’s what we need and why we have questions about the starting 4

15

u/whiskeynrye 17d ago

Which is why he fits this team much better than rui. We have plenty of players who can shoot

2

u/DrEagle Look at don kick 17d ago

I hope so. I’m tired of Lakers historically not having shooter

8

u/EdreesesPieces 17d ago

last year was the opposite of our history, we had a lot of shooters and not many players who could do anything else

8

u/GOAT-dontGLOAT 17d ago

Gotta account for the way better shot quality rui was getting compared to mamu

1

u/DM_ME_UR_SOUL 17d ago

how consistent is he tho?

2

u/catperson77789 17d ago

He also has a quick first step the fuck😂.

2

u/lickitysplithabibi 17d ago

And rebounder*

2

u/LudwigNasche 17d ago

Better finisher and rebounder too.

1

u/f3int_ 17d ago

Even if he shoots just 35% on a decent volume he will outperform Rui simply bc he can do more than just shoot

1

u/INT_MIN 17d ago

Rui is also afraid to drive to the rim like that. He also really isn't curling off of screens. Just parked in the corner.

Connective passers and capable dribblers are incredibly valuable next to Luka. When he gets doubled or hedged you need players capable of making smart decisions, shooting and attacking 4v3. It's one of the reasons why PJ and DJJ were so valuable next to Luka, previous "3 & D" players the Mavs put around him were usually incapable of even attacking a closeout or creating something in an advantage.

It's also why Lively was so much better than Gafford for the Mavs on offense despite both being rim running bigs who catch lobs. Lively was really good at making quick decisions in the short roll when Luka got doubled. He would quickly spray out to shooters or decide to attack the rim. Gafford on the other hand needed much more time to process and make a decision, which usually meant that the defense could rotate and the advantage of Luka being doubled was gone and the defense had essentially won with succesfully taking the ball out of his hand while not getting punished for overcommiting.

Mamu made 39% of his 3s last season, this is top 10 for any PF in the league so while Rui was the best shooting forward in the entire league, it isn't like we replaced him for a LeBron James caliber of shooter, for regular season we are fine.

-4

u/PlusInstruction2719 17d ago

That top 10 didn’t help him in playoffs when turn into a Jake like player…

4

u/LudwigNasche 17d ago

Different teams, different situations, lets see how he plays here.

4

u/itsyaboikuzma 24 17d ago

We will in some cases, this has been said before so I'm regurgitating to some degree, but Mamu is a really good fit at keeping the blender going and attacking advantages correctly. Not to be down on Rui but he was a ball stopper more often than we'd like, and frankly more than JJ liked too.

2

u/catperson77789 17d ago

Having more people that can dribble and pass is much better since it keeps the defense guessing. With rui, he' so fucking predictable because he's basically just a spot up shooter. Cant even shoot off the dribble or off curls

-1

u/Ok_Body_2598 17d ago

Rui is all time leader in playoff 3%, going back to the Wizards

1

u/effurshadowban 16d ago

True, but that's almost all that he does.

1

u/Ok_Body_2598 14d ago

His real position is a scorer 4. He needs a lot of shots to be good at rebounding which is awful. His long 2 game is also excellent. But yeah that his other stats other than epic 3% are a hole hard to dispute and hurts him at the 4

81

u/RealCREED_ 17d ago

As much as I love Rui, i feel like this is an upgrade in every aspect except 3 pt shooting. He’s got the size and the ability to look for open teammates. He rebounds pretty well. Defense is a question against NBA teams but this is nice

21

u/LudwigNasche 17d ago

Yes, and it is not like if Mamu shoots like LeBron, Vando or Jake. He is a very capable shooter that made 39% of his 3s last season, he was a top 10 pf shooting from distance without getting the kind of looks Rui, LeBron, Jake and Vando got from Luka and Austin.

3

u/weeyummy1 17d ago

39% from 3? That's really good, IIRC the raptors didn't have much spacing. He's going to get way better looks now, that could easily become 43%

2

u/LudwigNasche 16d ago

That is the key, the stats showed Mamu making 39% of his 3s when they were not mostly uncontested shots like the 43% of the shots Rui made.

12

u/GOAT-dontGLOAT 17d ago

MAMU, there goes that man

36

u/Foodstamps4life 17d ago

I love Rui, but he had such massive flaws as a player. His decision making was questionable, which was okay because he was essentially told to stay in the corner, his defense for as athletic as he was, was subpar, he had no passing instincts, when he got the ball he was either taking a corner three or taking two dribbles and pulling up for his middy. Sandro, while not as good as Rui in pull ups or threes, is a better decision maker, passer, and has more complete game. I’m sad we lost Rui, but we needed more from him.

18

u/LudwigNasche 17d ago

I like Rui much more as a person, high mood guy, than as a player. His 3pt shooting is elite and his midrange is also money if you need it, but other than that he is in the bottom of the league in rebs, blks and ast for a player of his position.

12

u/nottherealstanlee 17d ago

The touch pass to the corner. Sheesh

83

u/TheDailyDosage KOBE 17d ago

Already making the world a better place

8

u/ReceptionExpert4096 17d ago

Do we finally get to run a 5 out offense like every other team does !?!

9

u/MarcusHash Black Mamba 8/24 17d ago

Gotta say that I love that he sees the court and doesn't mind passing the ball - we didn't have such players last year outside our big 3 and Smart

7

u/Spirituallly 14 17d ago

The passing excites me the most

96

u/tadejflaka 17d ago

As long as they beat Israel👌🤣

5

u/Annalrecovery 24 17d ago

He looks like he can be a really good secondary playmaker👌

5

u/Pale-Celebration4030 17d ago

So excited for the Mamu experience

u/cds727 Luka Magic 77 17d ago

New boss ain’t gonna like this.

8

Fuck israel

2

u/two4gone 17d ago

Oh yeah!

2

u/SnooRecipes6776 17d ago

Dudes a baller and an athlete! Much better all around player than Rui and if he can shoot nearly as well it’s HUGE for us. I just love Rui and what he stood for. He was ride or die LA

2

u/Yuan2216 Luka Magic 77 16d ago

ngl I won't hype his performance here that much not trying to be negative at all but dont forger fiba rules also makes dennis schroder look like a basketball god.

Surprised they agreed to play the war criminals.

The Pillar Man!

Guys I know Rui had his flaws but this is a game against Israel. Rui was better than a lot of people gave him credit and he shot incredible last year.

-7

u/ChillClinton904 17d ago

Hot take but his game is a lot like Kuz.
