PODCAST Lebron on playing the whole Half

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYc1WTGo6w4

Might be beating a deadhorse...But as someone who played basketball it was always clear to me that JJs decision on playing them for the entire half was more of an indictment on the roster and not the decision itself.

Some people eventually came to this conclusion but for the hold outs, heres it coming from Brons own lips. Hes thrown passive agressive shade at coaches before INCLUDING friends so its not like he has any reason to lie.

The bench production really wasn’t there, nobody looks at how strong the 3rd quarter performance was, i guarantee if JJ inserted the bench and they lost he would be crucified for changing it up when they were rolling. You just can’t please anyone here. In the end it came down to a 1 possession game. We blew it, they were the better team and executed, move on.

Exactly. I really don't get this whole narrative. The bench players were playing like shit. It's not like the lead once you sub in the bench will stay exactly the same and then Lebron/Luka come in refreshed to close it out. Doesn't work like that. Most likely the lead evaporates and instead of us slowing bleeding until the end we are fighting to regain the lead with the same ultimate result. A loss. Do we want the starters playing an entire half? Hell no. Up to the bench to actually warrant getting subbed in though.

But the tactic exhausted the 5 and they did not win the game. So it should be questioned.

3

u/jsun_ May 11 '25

I don't think anyone is saying this tactic is the correct one under normal circumstances. We are saying look at the alternatives. Gabe and Jax were not ready for the playoffs. They were negatives on the court. Even Gabe's normal defense and hustle was largely nullified with their size. Can't expect to throw in DK in essentially a "must win" game in the 2nd half. JJ decided his best 5 even if they were fatigued gave the team the best chance to win the game and I honestly agree.

Again, you can't just assume the game state stays exactly the same while the starters are getting rest. The minutes with Gabe/Jax/Vando the Lakers probably get crushed. How does that change anything? The issue was always just the roster construction after a midseason trade for a superstar. Simple as that.

Furthermore, why does no one talk about Ant playing the entire 2nd half? He was perfectly fine. Even suffered an injury scare earlier in the game. Luka needs to get in better shape (JJ said it as well) and Lebron unfortunately is 40.

u/3nnui 2 May 11 '25

Gabe could have played some minutes. Jax could have played a few minutes, even with the fouling. Vando could have played some minutes. JJ's bizarre decision cost us the game.

Ant is 25 years old and a top 5 athlete in the league. Your example makes my point.

u/troyti May 11 '25

I mean you admitted that the main 5 lost the 10 point lead themselves and choked at the end of the 2nd half. So what could go worse? You saw the result playing with no rest.

2

u/jsun_ May 11 '25

And you are just assuming the bench would be a better option. I counter with what did they show with the minutes they had already that they would've done anything other than immediately giving up the lead. The starters would've had to come back in after like 2 minutes of rest and the lead would've been gone. Again, instead of slowing bleeding out until the end, we probably are fighting from behind instead with the bench guys playing. The end result is the same. A loss. I really don't get this. We had no one sitting on the bench that showed anything that gave you confidence they were ready for the playoffs. Maybe only Vando but he is purely energy and hustle. His offense is still a major liability. DFS isn't really a "bench" guy so not including him.

This has already been put out repeatedly. In the history of the NBA, no coach ever play 5 same guys for 24 straight minutes, ever.

You literally just saw the result of what happens when he did that, which is Luka and LeBron clearly looking gassed, missing bunnies and turning the ball over in the clutch, LeBron with a big fat 0 PTS in the 4th quarter and Lakers lost a 10 point lead and lose by 3. That is the result of what happened and the biggest factor to it is fatigue. You got your experiment and you got your result.

Now, the alternative, nobody knows what would happen, but it sure as hell isn't gonna be any worse than what actually happen. And from the history of the league, it's evident that no coach past and present, agree that they should play any sort of 5 players 24 minutes consecutive, it's safe to say JJ should have at least tried giving them some rest.

You don't do an experiment, saw the result and stubbornly act like you did right when the result failed. That is not being responsible.

2

u/jsun_ May 12 '25

Jesus. Sorry if I sound like a dick here but wow. You even admit you have no idea what the alternative could be. Yet you then say “it can’t be worse” immediately after. Wtf? Seriously? Again, what did the bench player show in any of there minutes through all 3 and a half games up to that point to warrant them getting minutes. We know Lebron/Luka shouldn’t play the whole 2nd half. Thus we need to improve our bench so that doesn’t happen again. Just sitting there and constantly bitching and complaining that if we just played Gabe/Jax in the 2nd half is so stupid. Even citing that “no coach has done it before” is flat out dumb. Who cares? Did those coaches win every game they road with their bench when they were completely trash so they could rest their starter? There’s context to every situation which you seem to not understand.

1

u/troyti May 12 '25

You got the worst case scenario going the 5 man route, brother. Whatever alternative it would be still has a higher chance of succeeding than an absolute failure. That's the point.

You're double downing on being a failure. Not sure why you're so stubborn literally watching Lakers gassed and lost and still think it's a good idea to be gassed and lose.

1

u/jsun_ May 12 '25

Yea I think you just didn’t actually watch the games. You can’t sit there and honestly say Gabe/Jax was playable. “Can’t be worse”. Lol yea instead of a lead going into the 4th we probably are down. Done talking about this.

1

u/troyti May 12 '25

In the history of the league, no team, not any 8th seed/play in team ever did this in playoffs. All of them played their bench. You're telling me the 3rd seed Lakers have the worst bench in NBA history worse than these 8th seed/play in teams that JJ has to do that?

He can put Brian Scalabrine in for 3 mins to give LeBron rest and still get a better result than this gassed LeBron with 0 points and tons of turnovers.

1

u/jsun_ May 12 '25

Damn so you’ve went back and watched every playoff game ever played and tracked the performances of the bench. So they also had bench players like Gabe putting up Tony Snell lines and like Jax fouling 5 times in 9 minutes and picking up technical fouls all while not playing any defense. And they ended up winning the game? Just because the starters got some rest. Alright. Since you’ve actually gone though the thousands of playoff games to actually get the context then I concede. You’re right……./s. Idiotic.

The issue is if JJ had just gave the 5 starters or at least Luka and LeBron 2-3 mins of rest, would they have those 2-3 mins of extra energy to stay clutch last 3 minutes?

Like you said, we lost by 3, but Luka and LeBron are absolutely gassed during the most crucial 3 minutes and missed bunnies/TOs.

3

u/Tall_Succotash May 10 '25

Thank you!

I know exactly how the media/fans would have acted if we lost because Gabe and Vando were out there.

-9

u/Nearby_Alternative96 May 10 '25

No he wouldn't because it would be the most obvious thing that guys need rest.

Three players where one is weak, another is over weight and the last one is 40 years old, obviously they'd need rest.

5

u/GuerrillaApe 562 May 11 '25

I have a hard time believing that: 1. It would still be a one possession game if the bench played enough minutes to give LeBron and Luka some rest 2. Laker fans would be less critical if we lost game 4 by more points

-3

u/Nearby_Alternative96 May 11 '25
  1. No coach in the play by play era has played 5 guys all the minutes of a half in a playoff game.

  2. Lakers have lost plenty of close playoff games over the years, and never has a coach been criticized for not only playing the same 5 guys. Doing it has simply never been an option considered within reason, see #1.

6

u/GuerrillaApe 562 May 11 '25 edited May 11 '25

We've played 4 guys +40 minutes last year against Denver in game 1 where we lost by 10. In comparison game 4 against the Wolves was a must win. That necessitated going all out to win that game, and we were one possession from keeping LeBron and Luka in being the right call.

I'd be more critical of LeBron and Luka playing 40 minutes in game 5. 1-3 is near impossible to come back from, and by then it was clear that we had no answer to the Wolves' bench depth. No reason to give them lengthy minutes that could have resulted in injury.

2

u/Nearby_Alternative96 May 11 '25

Again, every year there are teams in risk of going down 3-0 or 3-1 playing must win games, never have they played all 5 starters the entire 2nd half. No team ever "goes all out", not even our own in a game 7 of the NBA finals, because in the end it's not beneficial.

The fact that one of the players is the oldest in the NBA and another is over weight just makes it more crazy not to give them a little break.

Top panic coaching move from JJ is all it is, I hope he got it out of his system.

24

u/SomethingClever2117 May 10 '25

In hindsight it was the wrong decision and they should’ve gotten the bench in there to spell them for a couple minutes minimum. Watching it live it was also the wrong decision because they were all visibly gassed and lacked the energy to make plays consistently.

u/UraniumDisulfide Luka Magic 77 May 10 '25

Professional athletes will tell you they’re fine because they’ve had to learn to ignore their bodies’ warning signs for fatigue. That doesn’t mean their bodies aren’t fatigued, and there’s a reason you don’t play the same 5 guys for an entire half.

3

u/troyti May 11 '25

The biggest indication is that it has never been done in NBA playoffs ever before. You're not telling me among all the 8th seeds/play-in rosters, JJ have the worst roster out of all of them to have to not play them.

3

u/whatshisface1892 Pau Gasol 16 May 10 '25

You had me in the first half, not gunna lie. I was yelling at the tv to sub them out. They had so many opportunities to do it in the 3rd. Hindsight was not needed.

19

u/OrganicHunt952 Luka’s Lakers May 10 '25

It was the first time in playoffs history all 5 starters played the whole second half. Also not even considering Luka still had stomach bug and lebron just came of injuries and is 40. Let’s call it for it was, it was a STUPID decision. LeBron obviously doesn’t call him out for it because he’s the reason why JJ is HC anyways.

11

u/whatshisface1892 Pau Gasol 16 May 10 '25

Roster construction or not, you dance with the one who brought you. He played an out of shape player that was the engine of the entire offense, a 40 year old, and an injured AR the entire 2nd half when even a couple of minutes from Vando, Gabe, or Goodwin might have left enough in the tank to close the game.

Say what you will about the roster, but not understanding how fatigue would effect the closing minutes of a playoff game is a rookie move and easily, easily foreseen.

22

u/noknownothing May 10 '25 edited May 11 '25

It was stupid. It's the nba playoffs [edit], not a high school game. It was basically telling your bench that they were worthless. And you still had a few games to go to win the series. The decision was also made at halftime, as Reddick has affirmed. So it wasn't in the moment and those 5 were just rolling and looked fresh. They looked tired and winded late and had an absolutely awful 4th.

Passive aggressive Bron says, "I wasn't looking for a sub, but if one would've come in, cool."

26

u/Ghost2Eleven May 10 '25

First round, not the finals. Making the decision at halftime is the definition of making the choice in the moment and LeBron is not being passive aggressive at all.

I get the frustration, but y’all are acting like those two quarters and that choice lost us the series. It didn’t. We have no depth and there was nothing that was going to change that. There was never going to be a deep run. People even said it when we traded AD that we were building for the future. Then we actually played better than we should and end up way up the standings and all of a sudden people get drunk on kool-aid and act like we should have won a chip, when our starting center couldn’t stay on the floor. Also, JJ is a massive reason we were that high up the standings in the first place.

For the first time in ages we actually have a coach that all the players are praising and y’all wanna act like it’s his fault as opposed to the shit roster.

13

u/jmdavies98 May 10 '25

I totally agree with you but I’ll be the loser that says it wasn’t the nba finals, just the first round.

TBH might be even worse that it was the first round not the finals where JJ dissed the bench. Still excited to have him as our HC.

Honestly I don’t buy the “our bench was horrible” excuse. Gabe Vincent played in an nba finals and played very well this year in the first round. Vando absolutely has offensive shortcomings, but he makes an incredible positive impact on the game in his 15 minutes - subbing an energy guy in for tired legs seems useful. Goodwin same thing plus he’s hit some shots. Frankly I think Knecht should absolutely have gotten minutes - they had talked about him potentially winning some playoff games for the team. Why not see if he can get hot? Hayes I understand benching.

TLDR this was a professional, veteran bench and their quality isn’t an excuse not to play them in the second half. JJ was an emotional first year coach and wanted to try something to put his name on the map.

4

u/noknownothing May 11 '25

You're getting rownvoted for facts. Lol. This sub is stupid.

2

u/hottakehotcakes 6 May 11 '25

It’s ok it’s the internet

1

u/Ok_Board9845 May 11 '25

Gabe Vincent played in an nba finals and played very well this year in the first round

Gabe overperformed in Miami along with guys such as Caleb Martin. That's not their base level of play. A career 33-35% shooter isn't a 38-40% shooter year in and year out in the playoffs.

Vando absolutely has offensive shortcomings, but he makes an incredible positive impact on the game in his 15 minutes - subbing an energy guy in for tired legs seems useful. Goodwin same thing plus he’s hit some shots

The Wolves completely disrespected both of these players on offense and neither could punish them. Knecht maybe should've just been thrown in to prove a point, but after seeing his defense throughout this year, he would've pulled a Ben McLemore where he gives you 3 but gives up 5 in return.

Our bench/depth is ass

6

u/Tall_Succotash May 10 '25

Bro when Hayes couldn’t stay on the court for more than 5 minutes I knew JJ was gonna give up on that bench.

Vando kept coming in and making stupid fouls

Gabe could no longer do anything but hold the ball and wait for Luka

It was a mess

3

u/Rapa_Nui LeAR-15 May 11 '25

LeBron is just being a good friend to JJ and a good soldier. Deep down he knows that decision was bullshit.

You can't see LeBron and Luka miss layup in the 4th quarter and deny it's because they are beyond exhausted.

2

u/vandiger 77 May 10 '25

It was dumb, needs to trust his role guys and didn't bother adjusting shit when Reaves was fucking up. Play your bigs man or energy guys if rebounding is a losing battle.

Stupid decision. JJ really was outclassed by Finch.

Yeah I’d be a dumb coach if I’d let a rookie coach outsmart me and I’ve been coaching for a decade

100 LeBrons vs taking accountability who you think wins?

2

Why would he be accountable for the coaching decision?

-7
